So I've been wanting a watch case to store/display at least some of my collection and the watches I try and rotate thru. I'd been looking at the traditional wood box style on the web. It seemed that all the boxes I found had something I didn't like or were out of my price range. On the side I was surfing for old vintage military memorabilia and found some old leather government issued briefcases, and the thought popped into my head, "why don't I make a case out of one of these old briefcases?" So the idea was born. I first sourced a briefcase off a seller on Etsy for $40. This case is from the 70s made of top grain cowhide and since it is vintage, already has that cool beat up look. Next was to figure out how to hold the watches in the case. At first I was going to go the foam route but could get over the clashing of the old look of the case vs the sleek modern look of the foam. I decided to go with watch pillows, and I would build the dividers from wood. The interior of the case was a hard vinyl that didn't look all that good, so I lined it in a tan felt.

And the finished product with watches. Unfortunately I've already filled the case Oh and I just notice the sippy cup in the background of one of the photos, that's the life with little kids!

First: Great idea and nicely executed! I'd have lined the top and the dividers with felt too, as it makes for an uniform look. You wasted a bit of space, though - more than 12 watches should fit in that case Have you tried if the pillows fit vertically? Maybe with a bit of pushing, but nonetheless? An additional divider and you'll have space for 3 more watches... Or did you go with the "presentation" (instead of storage) look intentionally?

Thanks for the kind words guys!
Yeah I have a bunch more felt left over and I had thought about lining the top already. I'd have to look at how to line the dividers as they are slotted and can be removed if needed.
I thought about staining the wood, but haven't decided yet.
In the end I went the presentation route. I definitely could squeeze more in there but I don't know how it would look. Like you stated I may be able to get another divider in there and room for 3 more watches pretty easily, so I may end up looking at that as an option. The wood was pretty cheap and I have some left over to mess with.

I agree, nicely done. When we used to meet in Toronto for GTG's, something to carry the heard was always a problem. Now you need to rig a chain and handcuff.
