It's a slide rule and can be used for a lot of computations. The scales are to help with the different units, e.g. 2:00 is at the 20 minute marker because 2h = 120 minutes. For calculations using the internal slide rule bezel, see here: www.seikowatches.com/support/ib/pdf/rt01_e.pdfFor me it's too complicated to keep in mind... I can do percentages - maybe.

Many thanks guys, looks like I have some studying to do!
I have a Seiko 5 Sports Speed Timer booklet/manual on it's way from Tokyo. It is different to the one Bertnet has posted but I'm not sure if it has any instructions in English. I'll post a photo when it arrives.

I had a very hard time trying to understand these Speedtimer instructions before I realized that it WASN'T ME. It's just a very awkward 50 year-old Japanese to English translation. I carefully read over the brochure, and using my 25 years of experience as a middle school English teacher, came up with what I hope is a more sensible English construction.
