Obviously it was for the gold Seiko Alarm with the map of Alaska on the dial The Gruen may have a solid gold case. The Benrus is also a good watch!

Oh I like Gruen too, and have had a few Benrus over the years. Here both are plated, the Gruen shows brassing near the lugs but it isn't bad, the Benrus reminds me of Seiko's that have "Brass Like" Pop Metal under...I have that 7009 actually two but thought I'd grab it for the dial to try my hand at refinishing. I couldn't make that worse. I also suspect the Signal has a Seiko 66 under the hood...The Turtle has a AS1250 bump wind like the one you helped me ID a while back. The case is by DOXA. I had thought maybe it was a Turtle Time sold by Zell Bros and would have been a backdoor to owning a "Rolex" still would have been a nice watch to tinker with...

Gruen is about as close to a backdoor Rolex as you can get. Phil Sinclair(a member here) has posted about this previously

I saw the Turtle listed and remembered something about them and Rolex, and did some googling. Seems Rolex and Gruen were having watches made for them by a third out fit whose name escapes me. They have agreements on who could sell what where. Gruen got the USA Rolex Europe and Canada?? Rolex started to make their Oyster case 19?? but they couldn't use their name they moved slightly away from the three way into a different town. Eventually they got a jewelry store in the PNW Zell bros. to start to bring them in...But again not wanting Oyster in the USA they went with "Turtle Time" or so I have read..So seeing Turtle I thought AH-HA but nope...

Hi.The so called third party is Aegler. All three were in the mix . Rolex became a trust but has been pretty well run by the Aegler family since the death of Hans Waldorf. Some models were identical, in particular a Rolex prince and a Gruen doctors watch in the late thirties. Gruen movements were all Swiss except for Cincinnati movements up to the collapse in the fifties. Various owners afterwards used different ebauches. Cheers Phil

Just had a look at the watches on offer. The Gruen alone is worth much more than the winning bid even if not running. Cheers Philj

Cheers Phil Thanks I didn't mean to disrespect Aegler just couldn't think of the name as typing. My Grandfather was given a Gruen by my Grandmother (that my brother now has smh) he raved about Gruen and Hamliton back in the day...I keep my eyes out for the Veri-Thins and Curvex but they are either well worn or too expensive...
