Dearest members,
It is with a very heavy heart that I have to advise you all that one of our longest standing members and benefactors, Dani Barker, better known to us all as lordflagpolecrabtree, sadly passed away suddenly on Friday 1st December.
Dani was a very active member here on Wrist Sushi, having signed up to this wonderful forum when it was in its infancy way back in June 2013. He was an enthusiastic collector of watches, especially Seiko, with a particular passion for dress watches from his birth year, 1965. He had some wonderful pieces, which he regularly showcased on this forum. He also favoured some non-Seiko watches, including J.W.Benson and Helvetia.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Dani, and his wonderful daughters, earlier this year in Canterbury. We enjoyed a pint and a bar meal in the local Wetherspoon’s hostelry before retiring to his daughter’s student digs for a WIS chat and catch-up. He brought along a fantastic collection of his favourite watches which he allowed me to try on, including a recent SRP773 Turtle reissue that he felt he couldn’t get along with. I don’t think he held on to it for long, but I remember it cost him a fair bit extra in customs fees than he was expecting! He had many a dress watch in his collection that I’d be happy to own.
When we met he gifted me a few watches including a lovely 6619 Sportsmatic and a beautiful green dialled non-running 7019 Actus. He said that he wasn’t able to work on his watches himself so would appreciate some help. Well, when I got home the Actus started running, and pretty good as well. I messaged him that it wasn’t a non-runner after all, and I’d try and get it working properly for him if he wanted it back. He said he’d really appreciate it if I could sort out the Actus as it was one of his favourites. I messaged him only 9 days ago to say that I’d try and fix up the Actus, now that I felt comfortable doing so. I’d planned on doing it this week, with a view to sending it on by the weekend. I shall fix it up and send it on but, sadly, he won’t wear it again. How I wish I’d started it earlier.
Dani, you were an absolute gentleman. A very gracious and generous man, you will be sadly missed on this forum and many others.
I’m sure you will all join me in offering our very sincerest condolences to Dani’s family.
Rest in peace Dani, and thank you for all the memories.
