My 'former' employer has run into some financial hard times and has had to down size. Twelve other souls including myself were selected for the cull and were terminated this morning. We were given a going away envelope then escorted to our desks to retrieve our personal items then ushered to the front door. The only thing missing was the boot in the ass as we left A couple of the people have been with the company for over 25 years. I sure hope they got decent severance packages. The rest of us had at least three years on the payroll and as far as I've heard so far got the minimum required by law
On the upside, I'm nearly 71 and shouldn't be working anyway. This will give me more free time to hang out hear
Might have to sell off some watches if I intend to keep myself in beer!

Sorry to hear that Peter, it’s never good news when people get made redundant. I hope things work out and that you’re not in a position where you start to fall on hard times. Hopefully you’re able to kick back and enjoy retirement (even if it was forced on you).

Sorry to hear that, Peter. If I recall correctly, it was a temporary gig that became more permanent a couple years ago. Enjoy some time off before you figure out what to do next.

Well isn’t that a kick in the seat of the pants! 🤬 Life is full of surprises. As you aforementioned, this can be looked at from a different perspective. Freedom. You time. It’s short. We all think we’ll have more of it. Use it to your advantage. Stop and smell the roses. Cause the one thing nobody says on their deathbed is, “God, I wish I had worked more.”
Maybe you should get a hobby? Watches perhaps?
Rootin’ for ya Sir.

That's a bummer!
I've had two redundancies in my working life and the worst thing is seeing it as your own fault and so I'm glad you aren't seeing it like that.
I feel for you and if any of your co-redundancees are family men with kids at home and mortgages to feed I feel for them too.

That’s shite news Pete. Hope you are able to enjoy your new free time. You could always earn some beer money fixing watches for folks. And this’ll give you more time to pick on Josh!

What seems like me picking on Josh and visa versa is just bros having fun

I'm better off than the others because I don't have financial responsibilities like mortgages, car loans or college funds I have to pay. Sadly most of the others do have these kinds of financial achors to drag them down.
I will find something that brings in a little better than minimum wage and keeps me interested. If it's watch repair, I'll have to replace my Timegrapher that died last winter. I think the LCD got frozen

I just like being busy so something will come along. Maybe I could get into the carnivore plant business like Josh

Watches is a good hobby. I even repaired a few and have some happy customers. Now that I have the time, I will get some new eyeglasses, a new Timegrapher and some new screwdrivers then have at it.

Sorry to hear that, but at 71 you should be enjoying life more anyway. Back in 2011 I got downsized after 25+ years, along with several others that had been around that long. Between severance and unemployment I did better than working. It turned out to be a very enjoyable 10 months in between jobs. If that's what retirement is like I can't wait.

Hey Pete,
That sucks (or maybe it doesn't, depending on how you look at it).
The company you worked for handled the matter in a very class less manner. Shame on them.
At least you got a small severance package and your financial situation doesn't seem to depend on them.
Enjoy the time off and have some fun at the pubs, but don't tinker with watches until the hangover wears off! 7dfe79adc2f0

I have about half dozen watches that could use your help, once the hand is steady and the stein is pried off!

Hi mate. Pics of the pub bit would be cool. Particularly. Ones towards the end of the session rather than the start. Cheers Phil

Sorry to here that Pete. You might not be hit as hard as the younger guys but not leaving on your own timeline just sucks any way you cut it.
Happy Retirement is in order !
