I would like your trusted input folks on a dilemma I’m having. I recently acquired this beautiful 7548-7000 Japan A on its original GL831. I love this vintage strap, but, am reluctant to wear it as it’s a rare bird and if it were to rip or tear I’d be beside myself. I just received a new US199 from Larry. My question is, “Would you remove the GL831 for safekeeping and install the US199” or say, “You only live once” and wear it as is? I could search for an original z199...I have one on my 7548-700a JDM and love it as most would. The purist in me wants to resist putting anything new on a vintage example. (Kinda silly, I know) What are your thoughts/opinions?

Swap it and keep the watch safe while you enjoy wearing it

Swap it and keep the watch safe while you enjoy wearing it I’ve been looking at this from the wrong perspective...protecting the strap vs. protecting the watch. If the strap fails, I could lose both 😨

Meh. I "struggled" with this for a minute too. Wear it and don't worry! These are made to hold up but they are old and do degrade. Does it feel like it could fail at any moment, starting to rot? Then it's past "safe keeping" any way. Mine feels really nice so I'm not worried one bit. I won't wear it to work and expose it to coolants and oils and doubt it'll get much saltwater on it any time soon(PNW...BRRRR!)
Edit: all that said I have a number of divers on steel (and we know you do too, lol) so it gets passed up more often than not and will get limited abuse anyway.

I agree with this conclusion.
Do you have a seiko jubilee bracelet? How does the uncle seiko bracelet compar?

I agree with this conclusion. Do you have a seiko jubilee bracelet? How does the uncle seiko bracelet compar? If I put a “new” bracelet on this 7548, I want it to have that “vintage” look. Reason I’m more inclined to use US199 vs. Jubilee. I do like me some Jubilee though. Jingle Jangle.

Yes I love my Uncle Seiko Z199, and I agree it is a great wear.
But then again, put on the original GL 831 for a change of pace. It won't be breaking off. There is not enough there to worry about that in my book.
I wear my 6306-7000 and often my beater 6309-7040 on the GL831s. I wear my pristine 6309 to 7049 on an uncle Seiko beads of rice but that is strictly because it is so gorgeous!
