Perhaps you'd get more participation if you outlined the purpose of this project, and where it will end up?

Just a chance for members to be a part of something different. The watch will probably wind up in the "Wrist Sushi Watch Museum" Maybe sell it and donate the proceeds to members for subscriptions to the "Benefactor Group Access Only" ... Pass it around like the world traveler ? Something along those lines I suppose.

Okay, that's keeping it vague... I'm just saying that if you took the time to decide what you plan to do, and draft a summary that folks can understand, you might get others on board if they believe in the cause. Not sure how many members will just donate parts/time into a project, that really has no direction at this point.

If you send that shroud to me, I can remove the black paint, do a fine sandblast and have it coated in black titanium nitride.
Also, I've got numerous sapphire crystals that could be used.
Let me know.
Best,
Mike

Thanks for joining in! I thought the shroud was plastic (?) I planned on making a new one out of stainless. Along with a new case back we can customize. The nitride might be slick! What do We think? Just the shroud or other bits to match? As far as the sapphire goes, sounds like a good next step to me.

Not sure how many members will just donate parts/time into a project, that really has no direction at this point. I see your point too. I jumped in without knowing because it's kinda nice not to have a purpose or plan with something every once in a while. That and it sounded fun and I wanted to play. As far as what to do with it when we're done? I figure it ought to make a rotation back through everyone that gets involved so we can each hang out with it for a week or two. After that I like the idea of a prize for something or an auction to benefit something/someone... Or just keep passing it around till it becomes legend and we can all retire when we sell it at some fancy auction house!

The paint stuck pretty well so I don't think there would be a problem with another coating. A good sand blasting would clean up the rough edges I never got around to smoothing out. Of course a nice metal one would be even better

For the TiN coating, I'll need something in stainless.
I typically coat the case, caseback, shroud, bezel and the crown so I'll need all those parts at the same time so I can send them off for coating all together.
Sapphire options would be clear ar in flat oem style, domed blue ar and I may have a flat oem style in blue ar.
Keep me posted on things..David should already have my address.
Best,
Mike

Does 303 vs 316 matter to you?
How much effect does surface finish have - high polish vs blasted vs grained?
If I can pull off something cool in the center of the case back can you mask the perimeter and get a medallion effect? Too much?
And lastly can/should we do any Lazer work before or after coating?

Surface prep is s huge deal.. polished stainless will give you a super shiny coating, blast finish will give you a more textured finish that resembles graphite.
I'm checking with my laser guy tomorrow to see of he's able to do the laser engraving directly atop the TiN coating.
That will probably look the best.
316 is best...

The more donated parts from the more members the merrier.
How about someone is put in charge, establish the movement to be used, the word goes out and members with parts that fit suggest what they have to donate and members with skills post what they can do to finish it.
Then pass it around World Traveler style for even more member and forum street cred and then give it away open source which is what this forum was built on.

We did a good group challenge a year or so ago in the restoration section available for paying members . It was great fun indeed. We all had to buy a wreck and see what we could do with it.
In part hat challenge left me becoming prolific and in the last 12 months or so I have restored probably 40+ watches easy
I would be up for something

Or should I say "The GREAT Aquaman". For those of us Sushies who don't know Mike, he is a pre-eminent Seiko specialist in the refurbishment, modification, and case treatement in our Seiko collector hobby. When it comes to coating our beloved cases, be it in TiN (Titanium Nitride, like he did for me), other exotics, case work, shroud work, bead blasting, black PVD, you name it, Mike is a world-class artist and practitioner. That said, thank you Mike for your eagerness to help make this project succeed. Hope to see you a lot more 'around these parts.'

The Kanjiās under 500m translate to āAutomaticā. Futomaki is the perfect name for this collection of parts watch. The dial looks good. I suspect you made all the markers round to resemble Sushi Rolls but did you try different markers for the cardinal positions of 3, 6, 9 and 12?
Anyway, good work guys!

We actually did Pete. The round markers were chosen instead to keep the overall appearance clean and simple. After trying out a couple marker variations concluded it looked too busy. Iām open to any and all suggestions...after all itās a āgroup projectā.
