Bloody hell does this hurt!!! Flared up Tue night/Wed morning. Even my pyjama brushing it causes me to swear uncontrollably. Left big toe joint. Apparently that is the most common location but can Be in the ankle too. Been taking max strength Ibuprofen with limited effect. Had some Solpadol left from when I had that kidney pain in May. That helped a lot and let me sleep through the night. Been reading up about Gout and it looks like my Italian diet will have to change somewhat Will be trying a home remedy of Water and a teaspoon of baking soda. Apparently it helps dissolve the uric acid which then turns into those bastard crystals causing all the pain. Wonder if the cannabis oil sold in Holland & Barrett will help? Anyone else suffer from this horrendous thing?

Someone on a forum I used to frequent had terrible trouble with it. I’m talking cancelled holidays and hospital visits. Not fun.

I thought I had it, once. Second toe swelled up and even the bedsheet kept me up at night. Turned out to be an infected toenail. Im sure the gout is much ,much worse.

Had it bad once; couldn't walk for a couple of days. There have been a couple of minor flair ups but nothing too terribly painful.

I get it every so often, and yes, it is a bitch. Mine is typically the right big toe, first joint, instead of the second.

Mine only comes every year or two, but it's terrible when it does. Once they check your Uric Acid level, they will be able to tell if you should go on a daily regiment of meds to prevent, of just give you a scrip that you take when you feel it coming on. I prefer to only take meds when necessary, so I opted for the latter.

I've read that a Mediterranean diet is beneficial and being Italian I mainly stick to that but obviously summat else going on to cause it. Maybe too much chicken in my diet?

If you look back at history, they called it the "Rich man's disease", because it's supposedly caused by consuming red meat and alcohol.

I dont drink alcohol except on special occasions and my red meat intake is minimalso in my case the uric acid build up must stem from other foods or maybe dodgy kidneys.

Port and cheese are huge culprits I’d heard. Of which I’ve just consumed large quantities of both. Yet again. I really should pay heed and pack this stuff in.

Rob How did you realise it was just the nail? Or was it the Dr that diagnosed it? I diagnosed myself. Started tying my shoelaces looser, soaked my foot twice daily in epsom salt. After the nail started changing colors and eventually came off, my diagnosis was confirmed. Of course I told the wife this was confirmed by Dr. And it was the prescribed treatment. Rob

It started with some serious swelling and redness, and really painful to touch. My original diagnose was gout. Glad my medical opinion was wrong. btw. Drives my wife nuts when I use the term "in my medical opinion" Rob

Rob Well, I've had the pain and symptoms since last Tue night / Wed morning and no nail discoloration yet. Just had to take an ibuprofen and two Solpadol just to dull the pain so I can try to get some sleep. To all my worse enemies around the world. You know who you are... I do NOT wish this pain on you !
