Wrist Sushi seems to have attracted a number of people who came here as noobs and had never even changed a strap before.
Many of them are today very competent watch mechanics and a few are even becoming watch makers!
We don't see people on the other forums showing off their latest jeweling jigs, staking sets, pressure testers, tapping sets and Timegraphers.
This is the stuff that makes Wrist Sushi so interesting 7dfe79adc2f0

You’re right, and I’m one of them. I’ve probably spent as much on tools as I have on watches this past year or two, both elements of this hobby are very addictive. There’s something very satisfying about buying a knackered old watch from somewhere and coaxing it back to a very healthy second life and seeing good numbers on the timegrapher.

The willingness to get under the hood is one of the things I like about WS, along with the low drama and supportive atmosphere. I've learnt a lot here and appreciate the tutorials freely given advice of the members. Best forum around.

I'm also in teh "has spent lots of money on tools" category!
...
...but sadly, I haven't been able to spend any time with all my tools. Changing a crystal is the limit of my ability right now. MAybe there will come a time where I have more time for myself and my "hobby".
I guess when my 4yo leaves the house at the age of 30...

I don't think they leave any more but he should at least be out of your hair while tinkering

I don't have anywhere I can set up a bench so I have to unpack my gear onto the kitchen table. The lighting at night isn't great so half an hour or so on a Saturday or Sunday after lunch when the kids are playing is about all I can manage.

I have to agree, Peter, we have many folks here who have really advanced (wish I was one of them ). This is a great thread, I moved it where it can get more exposure.

First off, let me just say how much admire those who work on watches themselves. It really is terrific and as you say Peter, there's plenty here on Wrist Sushi. Hell, I've been tempted to raise my superficiality beyond just changing straps and bracelets but whenever that notion strikes me I adopt the same position I have when contemplating a work-out which is "whenever I feel like exercise, I lie down until that feeling goes away" Hope you don't mind but I'll just remain a poser.

Russ, we have more than enough adventurous members so that you can sit back and enjoy the show with pop corn and a nice brew. Don't sweat it, you provide your own style of contributions to the forum

I got a cheapish led bench light from amazon for Xmas and it’s changed my evenings. Now I spend far too long tinkering and not enough time sleeping. Still have to set up and then clear up at the kitchen table like you though.

We have some exceptional talent on here, both in terms of servicing skills and technical advice. For me, it’s a little over 3 years since I did my first bit of tinkering - a case clean on a 6119. A month or so later I fitted my first crystal. Can’t quite remember when I did my first tear down, but I do remember it didn’t go well!
I’ve still plenty to learn and don’t consider myself anywhere near a ‘competent’ tinkerer, but if it wasn’t for this forum and all the help, advice and encouragement given I wouldn’t have dared tackle anything!
