Is now a good time to start this thread? Team selections and predictions. Australia vs England (and Wales and Northern Ireland, and maybe Scotland) in the biennial (?) competition to win the trophy based around the ashes of some cricket bails burnt 142 years ago.

I'm picking Australia to win the first test. Can I put a tenner on that?

After the dismal display England put on after their 1st innings in the First Test, as much as it pains me to say this I can’t see any result other than Australia winning the series. We seem to have lost the art of test cricket, probably symptomatic of (IMHO) far too much emphasis on the one day and T20 format. Yeah, we might have won the World Cup and thrashed Australia in the process, but The Ashes is what really matters to both teams (or at least should do).
Smith was outstanding in both innings. Unless England find a way to skittle him early doors, he’ll rip us apart.

WOW!!! Australians and Englishmen talking about cricket and no mention of sandpaper I don't think we'll have it all our way, if Smith has an average game the rest of the team looks very mediocre indeed ...we'll see.

Should we call it the Smith thread? He’s the only one that really played in the first test... I thought Stokes, Lyon, Head, Wade and Burns had a reasonable game. Are half the players' names nouns or verbs? As long as Australia doesn't do its usual thing and bowl Pattinson until he breaks his back again, or thinks Marsh deserves another chance, they should be competitive. I don't reckon Ali will play the next test.

He really is one of our greatest spinners and is unfortunately overshadowed by Shane Warne.

I am teaching my 8yo (who is just learning cricket and loving it) how to say, “BowledWarnie” in an antipodean drawl after each good delivery. I really should show him the video of the ball of the century against Gatting.

Argh the famous Gatting ball, just found a YouTube of it and forgot how far it turned and the look of utter amazement that turned to bewilderment on Gattings face You could almost hear him thinking "what the fluff just happened, how the hell". I've a French friend that has just migrated to Australia, he's left his home country for good and really wants to be an Ozzy and fit in, I told him to every now and then, when in public, ghost bowl a ball cricket style and say hooooowzat I've yet to hear back to the reaction.....

Hi. I think the commentary is not taking Warner into account. He will put a number of big scores on the board. The lacklustre performance in the first test is no indication. Bad foot work will disappear and the runs will flow. Cheers Phil

We’ve got the depth if Smith staggers, they just need to stand up. Lyon had a great test as well but even Ali would’ve taken wickets on that fifth day pitch. Without Smith’s 300 runs that ended very differently - England will bounce back. Lords will suit their bowlers.

Well, we will see. I’d take losing the ashes though to have gained how my boy jumped round the room screaming his head off when we won the World Cup. Although I’m still hoping for a 4-1 win of course!

Hi. Might be a few quick high balls at pommie bowlers soon. Cheers Phil Shame that Smith couldn’t play, but Labus seemed to do alright didn’t he? Let’s see if our batsmen can avoid a collapse today, if they don’t then we should get to 1-1.

Oh dear. It seems that the usual batting collapse is happening.

Let’s just not bother with the rest of the series and avoid the embarrassment

I’ve been so fixated with MotoGP today that I didn’t even bother checking how the test match was doing. WOW!!!
Didn’t see that coming at all
