As showing in today’s WRUW thread, I picked up one of the new SEIKO 5 series this week. Now, given that these were only recently released (and presumably only recently manufactured) there’s something odd about the serial number - 03xxxx. In line with the usual case back serial number convention I’d have expected it to be 93xxxx. I checked the photos that suntzu posted of his SRPD71 and that starts with an ‘0’ as well, as did the one I tried on at a jewellers a few weeks back. Strange...

I wonder if the release was brought forward for some reason Like buying the next year's car in the Q4 of the prior calendar year?

Mine also starts with "07...." And I was going to post this same thing along with a review that hasn't happened yet. ["https://imgur.com/a/cHp6qQf.jpg"] imgur.com/a/cHp6qQf

Perhaps all the parts were manufactured 9 years ago

We've definitely seen cases of dials and casebacks not matching their production years, I'd be curious to see the date on the back of your new dial (assuming seiko still marks them with the production date)

I’ve seen a few on eBay and they all have ‘0’ as the first digit as well, so it seems to be consistent at least.

I have heard of a SRPD73 beginning with “09”, too.

So, I emailed Seiko Customer Services here in the UK a few weeks ago, and they said Head Office had been asked for a response. I chased them up yesterday and received the following reply - Good Afternoon, Sorry for the delay with reply. The serial number on the New ‘5’ has no bearing to the year of manufacture and for this series is purely a manufacturing reference and no more. I hope this information is of interest to you. Kind regards Lorraine Seiko Customer Service Service Centre SEIKO UK Limited SC House Vanwall Road Maidenhead Berkshire SL6 4UW Hmm. Seems like an odd departure from convention just for this series

Awesome information Nick I added another Seiko 5 Sports, the SRPD59 as shown it has a 17XXXX number. It is later purchase and presumably manufactured later than my other. Definitely as per your email response.
Rolex used to use sequential serial numbers, very helpful in dating a used watch. But then people started only wanting "a new number" at their ADs and some models will sit for a year or more before purchase. So they moved to random serial numbers.
Kind of the opposite here.

If this is Seikos new policy for all models this is going to be seriously confusing in 20 years time when people care about the dates on "neo vintage" Seikos. Best we start a database now while we still have some idea about the year of manufacture of these watches 😆

According to SEIKO UK it’s currently only being used on this series. I guess time will tell if it becomes the norm.
