Seiya has sourced catalogue images of the next-generation 6R35 Alpinists, which will be available in January 2020: www.seiyajapan.com/blogs/news/the-alpinist-will-make-a-comeback-in-jan-202070-hour power reserve 6R35 movement, the black-dial one's hour markers, hand-set, and cyclops looks more like the 1995 4S SCVF Alpinist version than the 6R15 black-dial SARB015, and still with 20 bar water resistance, even though it will now come with a display case-back. They are said to be 39.5 mm in diameter, slightly larger than the 6R15 models' 38 mm. The black-dialled one comes on a bracelet, as previous generations of Alpinist also did.

Seiko lost me on this model line when they quit putting 'Alpinist' on the dial.

"X" and cyclops fans rejoice! Seriously
And CJ is right, what about the Alpinist on the dial?

And CJ is right, what about the Alpinist on the dial? I don't like the cyclops either, but it seems they have it because they're going for a look like the ones from 1995, which also have it: www.seiko-design.com/en/alpinist/index.htmlNone of the last generation of automatic Alpinists with 6R15 movements since 2006 (SARB013, SARB015, SARB017, SARB059, SARB061, and SARB063) have had "Alpinist" on the dial, just on the case-back. The Digital Alpinists haven't had it on the dial either.

So it sounds like the same watch but with cyclops and the X on the dial. And let me guess, they increased the price? Compared to the SARB013/5/7, the new one’s rumoured to be 39.5 mm rather than 38 mm, so slightly larger. The new one has been upgraded with the new 6R35 movement with 70 hour power reserve versus the SARB ones’ 6R15 50 hour power reserve. The new one has a display case-back rather than a solid one, but retains 20 bar/200 m water resistance. Compared to the SCVF Alpinists from 1995, the new one is larger and has a lower beat-rate and thicker movement, but that was also true of the 6R15 ones, but re-gains the cyclops lens. So it’s still better than the 6R15 ones in terms of specs. Compared to the SARB013/5/7, the RRP is 50% higher, at 75,000 JPY vs. 50,000 JPY for the green-dialled model on brown leather strap, both prices excluding sales tax. The SCVF Alpinists has a 2,000 JPY premium for the stainless steel bracelets too, the same as these new ones do, so I assume that the SARB ones were the same for the SARB013/5. Bear in mind that SEIKO do not increase their prices every year with inflation, so 50,000 JPY from 2006 (when the SARB ones were introduced) to 2020 means that the real price of the watch has decreased over time, and is not the same as 50,000 JPY in 2020, so it’s not actually as much as a 50% increase in RRP in real terms, when inflation is taken into account. The SCVF ones were 33,000 and 35,000 JPY back in 1995, but again, the same applies.

I don’t care for the magnifier, but that can be removed. Frankly, the X is a fair trade for the massive DIASHOCK 23 JEWELS.

Yep. They lost me all the way back in 2006. Last one I liked was the 4S15 Alpinist.

It's wonderful that Seiko thinks that all it takes to "move something upmarket" is to slap that ugly PSX logo on the dial.
Honestly if this had the Alpinist logo on the dial I would be all over it even though it's going to cost twice as much as the SARB017 and be bigger.
Oh well.

Looks good, but not $700 good. Wonder what they'll be going for in a years time from various resellers. I understand the upgraded movement likely adds a bit of cost, but no reason this should be going to $690 when the prior generation were going for closer to $350 prior to being discontinued.

As much as I feel tempted to get a new Alpinist, I’d rather spring for a 4S15 Alpinist because those tick all my boxes for an ‘Explorer’-style watch.

I could live with it, if the pressed through numerals didn't look like a cheap Chinese Seiko copy, maybe the gold colour makes it worse.

Looking at the 4S15 black Alpinist and comparing it with the new PROSPEX black Alpinist which is an homage to it, I've only just realised that they've cheaped out on the lume with the later ones - on the 4S15 one, the triangular markers were metal frames filled with lume, and the dots to the outside of the makers were just silver nubs, whereas on the new one, the triangular markers are just silver metal, and the small dots/nubs to the outside of them are the lume, as on the SARB017 and SARB015.

All I can say is that I'm glad I picked up an"old" one when I did and that was only months ago....
