My first "real" watch was one I inherited from my wife's great uncle and it was in the course of trying to find out a bit about it that I got interested in this great hobby. It all started with this auto by J W Benson. I managed only to find out that J W Benson was an old company from London that made quality watches, with Swiss movements. A few weeks ago while looking at vintage watches on E-Bay I saw this J W Benson movement (from the forties I think) and it was only £1 (+£6 postage !) so I bought it on a whim with no idea what to do with it. Described as "overwound" I thought I might one day find a case to put it in then get it fixed. When it arrived I poked (yes, poked laugh1.gif) the second hand and it started up. It ran for nearly 24 hrs and after winding it up again it ran for another 24hrs. But that's not the only good bit. It lost only 5 seconds the first day and 3 seconds the next, and after a week it was only 20 seconds slow. Unbelievably only a couple of weeks later this popped up. Described as working but stuck in the case back, I thought I could transplant my movement into the case. I went for it and when it arrived I easily removed the movement from the case back. However, in the process I managed to break the crown off (not a good start), but fortunately it has the type of case that the crown slots into. Ended up with this: It's a lot smaller than my usual choice but I like it. The only strap I could find for it was a Nato which isn't quite right for it, but the way my luck's going with this one, hopefully something in 16mm that's more suitable will turn up soon. Here are my two Benson's together.
