The impossibly small printed Alba 'Hot Gear' Circuit Chronograph for me today. Even with my new glasses and current prescription I cannot read it's finest print by eye alone. The date ring around the dial is laughably intricate on this 38mm watch. What is very cool though is that after a 5 month period of silence Seiko came through with an English owner's manual PDF for it! I queried them back in August of 2023 and was told their in-house scanning equipment had a network failure and that I would need to wait. I'd forgotten all about it and then in the middle of the night last night it showed up with a polite apology for the delay.
So for anyone looking this is an impossible manual to find save for someone posting a Dutch version many years ago as photos. Enjoy!

It rained overnight and is currently misting, so of course I need this massive bruiser to weather the elements.
Actually the power reserve is winding down, so needs some wrist time since the stupid Braun electric toothbrush charger trick isn't working for it.
The funny bit about this watch is that despite being larger than my 300M, 600M and 1000M Tunas, it's only rated for 200M. In its defense, it's sometimes called the Kinectic Tuna, so maybe that's its excuse for hugeness.

Technically this makes good sense as pressure exerted by water at depth delivers force over area. Said another way, the force exerted on the item is equal to the pressure times the area. So the bigger the area, the more force generated for the same amount of pressure. Also important is the shape of the crystal. A flat piece of glass versus a double domed (inside/outside) piece of glass won't resist that force as well.
There's a reason windows are small and spherical on deep diving equipment!

I kinda figured the design was so that the watch, slipped over a fist, could serve as a passable knuckle duster. But now I know the real reason.

Seiko has recently issued many 200M divers with the "tuna" shroud. I think the majority of these 200M "tunas" are not monocoque cases (as are the 600M an up) Tunas. There are several 300M quartz Tunas from several years ago with two piece cases. I'm guilty of creating a "tuna-wannabe" with my SRP227. It originally came with a plastic shroud (which looked kinda cheap) which was replaced with a yobokies stainless shroud. Looks tough but I don't consider it a Tuna. More of a shrouded air diver.

Oh, I do not consider the 5M85-0AD0 to be a Tuna. The Tuna class of watches, as you said, had the monocoque cases, and for the modern era quartz versions, the 7C46 movement (and previously the 7549). While "Tuna" is an enthusiast name rather than a Seiko term, I think we all agree with what is, and is not a Tuna (and my Kinectic diver is not). I also don't consider my solar "tuna" a true tuna either.
BTW, I like your homage. Enjoy!

Not that I needed it but this wears smaller than the regular mm300. Guess black does make you look thinner

Finally set the Apple Watch down after a couple busy days, and found something more interesting to wear:

That thing sure is easy on the eyes Seth. You wouldn't happen to have an old 6117-8000 laying around would you? I'm curious if the new bracelet fits on it.

This one is really well executed for a reissue. I’m very pleased with it and the accuracy is excellent fortunately. And given the limited flexibility in sizing the bracelet I was fortunate that it fits perfectly. There’s only one micro adjustment. It was pricey for the movement inside but overall a fantastic looking watch. Kind of makes me reconsider a lot of the mid range Seikos I have that don’t get the wrist time. The old quality over quantity debate.

Wait. inboost - You emailed Seiko asking for a 20+ year old user manual scan from their archives, and a few months later they got it to you? I wonder how far that kind of request could be pushed... ?
