Hey Guys, I know this doesn't look so exciting to some, but to others it will be mighty cool. I've been speaking to a few people in the community about reproduction tools for a while. I'm now working in a 3D printing lab and have managed to pump out my first protoypes. So check this out and tell me what you think -

I should note, this is a copy of an S-510, which is this beast here - It needs a little more work, but I'm 90% there to a usable piece.

It's wild mate, I see a bit of this stuff on telly and it blows my mind, like a 3D, solid hologram type thing . . . I don't comprehend how it works but it's brilliant.

Same basic principles as the Star Trek 'replicators'. Jay Leno did a segment one time on these 3D printers where they took an existing steering box or some such an created/printed out an exact copy in resin. The result was a working part!

The technology is old as the hills, at least 30 years old, it's just becoming common because the patents have expired.
To put it simply, think of a bubblejet printer, that squirts molten plastic instead of ink, and can move up and down on the Z axis.
There you have 3D printing!

Beautifully explained mate, thanks heaps . . . had no idea the concept had been around so long.

Very cool indeed.
The base technology is decades old, but the past 5 years or so has seen significant advancement and more mainstream adoption. I had lunch with guys from HP a few years back and we talked about this and just how detailed it can get now. It amazed me then and still does. Pure sci-fi brought to life.

That's excellent work, well done. Reading between the lines, am I correct in thinking you'll be selling these?

I have an original set of these, Seiko-made, and I use them almost every single office day. Essentially, if I'm in a movement, I'll use one or both parts of the set. This particular piece is absolutely essential for working on 613x chronographs. Setting a new sweep hand is not only hard to do without one, but you run a real danger of pushing the chrono wheel jewel in the chrono bridge out of place. Trust me, I know.

That's excellent work, well done. Reading between the lines, am I correct in thinking you'll be selling these? Yeah that's the plan, along with some other cool 613x specific tools I'm developing. The piece pictured is actually a S-510 for the 701x series chronos, but its essentially the same tool with some minor differences. Hopefully I should be able to wrap the project up sometime soon. As Spencer mentioned, it is not recommended to do hand setting on the 6139/6138 without this tool. I also found out the hard way.

OK I did some fine tuning on the product today and I've managed to knock out 4 final protoypes. They are slightly different to the original S-510, in that they have a plastic button (seems to work OK so far), do not have a lump for the support on the minute wheel (I will probably add this on the final version) and are a tight fit on the movement. Which is good because the original isn't. So here's an image -

Looking good - well done. thunbsup.gif Thanks for the update.
Looks like you'll have the design perfected before I get round to my 6139 project....really looking forward to it, keep us posted, cheers!
