This is a watch I got from Ramon a couple of years ago intending to restore it... I never got around to doing anything other than servicing the movement. Well, a couple of weeks ago I decided to have a go at the dial. I removed all the mungy old lume and that left the markers looking all pitted and forlorn. I decided to sand down the ruined chrome and just apply lume over the shiney brass... In spite of my shaky hand, I did manage to keep the lume material on the markers surprised-scream-smiley-emoticon The thing I learned is that the lume needed to be applied over a white or silver colour so it came out white. Well, I now know how to get that perfect aged patina yes1.gif I had a set of really badly corroded hands and after cleaning/sanding down to the brass, they still looked horrible so even if I had the silver plating kit they would have still looked crappy. With nothing to loose, I used a craft metallic silver ink pen which did a fairly decent job of spreading a thin layer of paint on the hands. This covered up all the ugly and even though they look painted, aren't too terribly ugly. I then applied lume. With no background to show through, the lume is much whiter than the markers. Next experiment will be to see if I can mix some lume to match the markers. The bezel got a light sanding to take out the bigger marks then I just used a Sharpie to colour in the markers to see how it would look. I will eventually redo them with proper enamel paint. I did the 5,15,25,etc marks with lume. Not sure if I will leave this alone or just do all the marks black. This is definitely a learning experience. Hopefully when I get the silver plating kit, I will be able to turn mungy old hands into new looking ones.

I'd say that is a very respectable beater, nicely done.

Total agree with you, practice is key to this reluming a dial. Pratice is partcularly important when you have only a printed dial, I use a loupe and also turn off the lights frequently to make sure the lines do not need any coaxing...
Nice job btw
