Given the choice if the fund's were actually available , how many member's would purchase a Grand Seiko ?
Or would you buy a Swiss timepiece of equal $$ value ?

I voted for GS with a heartbeat! I love any style (Either Auto or SD or Quartz) GS pieces a lot.
I love many Swiss pieces, too, but if I have to choose one, my choice will be a GS.

Excluding the jagging of a late sixties Speedy, I reckon I'd go with a GS . . . lots to chose from and many that totally crank my motor.

GS automatic or Rolex Datejust. I'd have to go with an Explorer;-) An hour ago I visited a Rolex dealer to receive an extra link for my Sub bracelet. The watchmaker there showed me the new datejust II and it's HUGE compared to the old one. Strange how some watches are totally different than expected. The Explorer is a cool watch as well. You mean the 1 or 2? I must say I like the new 39mm 1 very much. But the Explorer 2 is also great, choices choices I stopped smoking a year ago so it's time for some reward again yes1.gif

I love the dial on the old 1016 but at 36mm it would look daft on me so perhaps an old Explorer2

The question is Swiss vs. GS. Fairly stilted question as most people don't buy this way. If one had $7000 to invest in a watch it might be a question of brand A vs. brand B vs. brand C, not really one of nationality
I don't mean to split hairs and I'm not trying to be difficult. It's like saying Lexus vs. German. I might rather an LS450 over a Benz, but I'd rather a Porsche over an IS.
As for me... GS LE blue diver over Rolex Sub/SD Rolex GMT II over any GS GMT GS Snowflake (or most others) over any similarly priced Swiss dress watch

Interesting Dave, I like the threesome comparison. Well done.
So, for me, it would be: - Black Dial Rolex Sub over any Seiko diver, period and White Gold Bluesy Sub as Top Gun - GS GMT over the Rolex GMT by a hair - While I simply love the SBGA011 Snowflake dress watch, and I will get one some day (with 2 in college that means a few years from now unless the "unreal deal" comes my way). That said, my Rolex Datejust 116233 Champagne Dial on TT Super Jubilee is so freakin' stunning in any light that it wins hands-down on pure wow factor. The dial has a life of its own that changes in differing lighting. The Gold is so pure in color that I find myself just staring at it. Also, with the TT Datejust being quite a bit more pricey than the Snowflake, maybe it's not the like-for-like GS vs Swiss comparison being asked by the OP.

Dollar for dollar you get so much more from Japan then you do Swiss, even at the luxury level. Status and brand recognition, not so much. Just have to choose where you want your money to go. If I could ever afford this model I could easily drop the mic and call it a day on this hobby. I mean really. Where do you go from here?

Watch out SpinDoctor! The GS line can easily start its own addiction....and a dangerous one at that!

That's awesome, Funny that two of your three are Rolex, but you'd choose the GS GMT over the Rolex GMT...one of Rolex's most iconic models and the only Rolex I'd choose over GS. While totally different than mine, I love your choices! Bravo!

I think I'd rather have a Rolex 5513 than a GS diver, but there isn't a Swiss 3 hander at the price point I'd rather have than my GS Snowflake.
So... undecided I guess.

I know what you guys mean. I am so drawn to the GS Snowflake SBGA011. I've handled and worn it at 3 different Grand Seiko ADs now (NJ, PA & SC) and I simply must own one some day, hopefully soon. Such grand elegance, beauty in the subtlety, and of course the horology behind the Spring Drive.

I was on business in AZ and went to the AD there on Monday to get the snowflake. They also had the blue LE diver but I resisted and just git the snowflake. the will power laster Until Thursday morning when I called and had them deliver it to my hotel. Dangerous temptations indeed.

I'd probably go for one of these if it could be found within the budget

As some of the guys already said, I'd go for the design and look (and to a certain extend the history) rather than the brand. I'd probably prefer the 5513, Speedy or Reverso over the average Grand Seiko.

It's an interesting question. There are a few GS that I've been eyeballing for quite some time that I would love to own. I wouldn't need them all but one would suffice. And yes, if I could scratch the cash I would buy one in a heartbeat. But for me it isn't the clear cut 'either or' scenario. I do plan, before I perish from this world, to own several more time pieces among them both a Grand Seiko and a Swiss timepiece, most notably an Omega. How and when I get there will depend on cash and timing. I could very well purchase an Omega long before a Grand Seiko.
However, if I was presented with both and told that I could only choose one? The Grand Seiko without another thought.
