Some time ago I solved the problem that all watch collectors face, where to store the watches safely and in a manner that they can be seen and easily retrieved to be worn.
My solution involves a clear plastic storage container, with lid. Capacity is 10L and approx. internal dimensions are 46.5cm x 30cm x 7cm deep.
They look like this:
and with the lid off:
here in the UK these are readily available and cost about £8.
Then you need some high density foam. This is not so easily found. I was lucky that in the town I live we have a community scrap store. Local businesses donate things which are then either given to local play schemes and / or sold very cheaply.
Now and again they get off cuts of foam which I pick up for a few £'s.
You just need a piece at least as big as the box
This piece was 3cm thick which works very well.
Then I cut out a piece to fit the box - 46.5 x 30cm.
I use a serrated kitchen knife for this. Once the blank piece is cut out, I mark the 24 (3 rows of 8) holes to be cut out.
The marking out is fiddly, especially if you don't want to get ink lines everywhere. I have a technique for this now (I'm on my tenth box!!).
The vertical lines are marked at:
2.5, 5, 8, 10.5, 13.5, 16, 19, 21.5, 24.5, 27, 30, 32.5, 35.5, 38, 41, 43.5
The horizontal lines are marked at:
2.5, 9.5, 11.5, 18.5, 20.5, 27.5
e.g. each cut out is 2.5 x 7cm
The cutting out is tedious, but again must be done slowly and carefully if you want it to look good when finished.
There are 24 holes to be cut out, so 96 cuts to be made.
When finished check that each pushes out fully
here it is finished
and with a few watches in
the lid stops dust getting in, and the best bit ...... they stack
