Got this for more than I wanted to pay the other day. Not a huge mistake price-wise, but no bargain by any means. I had to do some work to get the 7002A movement back - the train bridge screws had all backed out, and the 2nd wheel and balance were both broken. It's running great now, and I threw it on a solid-link that was in the drawer. Now, I'd thought the -700j's had the pepsi insert, but I'm the first to admit that I'm not up on these. So, legit? Semi-legit? Utter crap?

Agreed; the dial also has the 17JEWEL script which is only correctly found on the 700A and 700J.

The database shots I've seen show the -700J as the pepsi-bezeled model. There's one of one under that heading that has the right caseback but the dial is wrong. It's also the one with the black insert. The other one shown has the correct dial text and has the pepsi insert. Hmm.

Check out the Divers reference; it has been a lot better researched.

Divers reference at SCWF? Here's what it shows for 7002-700J:

Divers reference at SCWF? Yeh; sorry, I should have been more specific. The 7002-7000 and 7002-7009 seem to be identical, with the difference being only the marketing regional code at the end of the case number (0 and 9). These 2 are both 150m divers. Their inscription says "WATER 150m RESIST" on the dial. The 7002-7001 is almost identical to the 2 above but the dial has the line "17 Jewels" added underneath "WATER 150m RESIST." The 7002-700A is a 150m diver with a blue-and-red bezel. The 7002-700J, according to Shawn Taylor/shawn, is another variant -- "Japan only market version with '17 jewels' on dial, but with red/blue bezel." As with all things Seiko; we will probably never know for sure

As with all things Seiko; we will probably never know for sure I'd love to know what the real answer is - the insert that's in it now I'm just not sure about. I do have an original pepsi insert but with my luck I'd swap it in only to find out that the real answer is what's there now. It's interesting also because image searches are so inconclusive - there are so many that contradict each other.

Don't sweat it...don't change it...enjoy it! lol, original pepsi bezel is installed. The black insert was A/M I believe though it's interesting - it had the metal shim under it.

Hard to tell but I think the black insert was legit. Had the right size pip and looked pretty good. Could be AM, but.... No matter. I have a soft spot for the 7002 as my Dad wore one. Man, I wish I had his. Disappeared in a flurry of hospital stays in his last weeks. Anyway, pepsi or black, a very under appreciated model. Now that you have her rigged up, wear it tomorrow...and see my new post!

The black insert looked too new, and the pip was a solid lume mixture from top to bottom - there was no lume window. There was an original shim underneath it, but it was glued to the ring which is not a Seiko thing to do. The rest of watch appears original and showed a lot more wear than the insert, which was new. Every picture I've seen of this model that looks legit has the Pepsi insert. These are all the things I went over. I think this is correct now as it is.
Wait, your dad had a 7002 that went missing? That sucks!
