The dial is original. All the fonts are correct; the date window has the correct bevel and the fact that the lume is dead all point to an original dial that likely came with the watch from the factory. That only leaves the hands and it's hard to be sure from your picture. They should be flat and not slightly rounded over on the edges. also the sides of the arrow on the minute hand should be slightly rounded, not sharp. If that's what you see in person then you have probbaly got yourself a watch that is as original as they get. It is correct if the day and date wheel displays are not matching. The date wheel always looks duller and almost grey compared to the nice white day wheel. Thanks for the input. Michael appreciated. Will definately do my homework on this model in the near future. 1: So dead lume on a SEIKO from 1985 without discoloration is correct? I have had quite a few older SEIKOs that have had great lume. Due to sun exposure? 2: Is there a difference between date windows depending on Suwa/non Suwa dials? This chamfer is most def not as big as on my last 7040.

Even in your pics I can see the difference in the day and date wheels. The pics are somewhat over exposed but the difference still shows through. Some exposures show the day wheel to be brighter than the date wheel and others the opposite...but that is just camera and lighting angles. I won't go out on a limb about the hands though; they are suspect but I do favour AM or SKX ones.

I think we need a new good 7040-guide because there is no slant on the bezel inlay and the chamfers on the date window is a lot smaller than I expected when comparing to other 7040s. The guides I've seen have not taken this into consideration.

Your Dial code is 6309-704MT, which indicates a "Singapore" dial. Your back should not state "Japan A", but simply "A" - also, it's 1985, so a late model which is almost certainly not made in Japan (they go up to '83 if I recall correctly, but that's debated). The later dials have a much smaller chamfer on the date window.
I would say the dial is absolutely genuine. The hands... maybe. Could be a trick of the light that lets them seem rounded when they're not. Play a bit under a lamp and see for yourself if they have sharp edges and are steel. AM ones are chromed and have rounder edges (a bit more puffy than flat).

I started collecting these infos in a thread on TOF: www.thewatchsite.com/21-japanese-watch-discussion-forum/168010-6309-7040-7049-trivia.htmlThese should be incorporated in a reworked guide... But I was too busy to do it. Feel free to use all that info and update the guide.

Other than handset and crystal, I think it's all legit ( hands just look too good considering the aged lume of the markers) Rob

The hands look AM to me, and I'm not sold on the bezel insert. It looks like an artificially aged one to me. The pip is off center in a strange way and the triangle does seem to come down far enough.

Somebody in my city offers this 6105: Do you think the dial is original? It has very white lume wells, but I think I can see some "spots" on them. AM Dials would be "perfect", I guess. Pics are very grainy, I know. I already asked for a better one of the dial. Was serviced by a local watchmaker with a thing for Seikos. Thanks for your opinions. Price is 800 Euros (~870 USD, 600 GBP). That's a relatively good price for a serviced original, right?

I've seen this one as well but unfortunately I am as unsure as you... So far it looks good to me including the hands with the slightly shorter sweep hand but I'm still unsure. Wait for better pics or meet the seller in person.

Looks okay to me, seconds hand length is fine (it's the same as mine and others i've seen).. just looks to have had a relume on the hands and dial. The seconds hand should have the red outer circle but not a huge deal..
I paid $700au for mine, and it was serviced.. but it was an absolute bargain. I'd say that price ($1200 aus) is probably about in line with what they are worth. I don't know if a dial relume would detract from the value or not though..

Certainly looks good, especially the hands.
Most of the ones that i have seen, including my own, have degraded hands.

Looks Ok to me & the sweep is correct as the longer ones were mainly found on the 8000's

Better pic of the dial. I think I will go for it. Might be re-lumed, but a good one if it is.
