This Seamaster Cosmic 2000 diver arrived in the post today. It had been up for auction on the bay a few times but the starting price was way too high but when it had been reduced to a more sensible level, I fired off quite a few questions to the seller one of which was what wrist size does it fit ? When the answer came back as roughly 7.5 inches I told him I wouldn't be bidding at the current price as my wrist is a bit bigger than that, but I told him that I'd still be interested if it didn't sell & he reduced the price a bit, to give me a bit of leeway to purchase some bracelet links. Anyway, long story short, he got back to me & after quite a long chat on the phone, I bought it at a price I was happy with bearing in mind that it looked like I'd need to find links for it. When I got it today, I found it will fit a bigger wrist than mine so I'm very happy. The watch is supposed to have been serviced recently, I've no proof but do have a written 7 day money back guarantee so lets hope it keeps running sweetly as these cases are quite difficult to open. It's 38mm across the bezel, about half an inch thick & weighs about 105 grams. It hacks too. Really like the solid, heavy bracelet & the big crown. I can't put an accurate year of manufacture on it without opening it but from research, they were produced between about'68 & '72 & were also issued to certain members of the US Navy & the Royal Navy in Britain who gave Omega quite a lot of input into the design. I don't think it's a particularly rare watch but in the 2 years I've been hunting one out, I've only seen one in this condition on the bay & maybe 3 or 4 that had lume missing, wrong bezel inserts etc. So that's one grail off my list. I've noticed that the quick-set date will turn & change both ways. Don't know if this is a fault or if it's okay to change the date backwards sometimes? Anyone have any ideas?

That is really elegant - what a great piece. Love the countersunk Omega symbol on the clasp. What's the general price range on these?
EDIT: the more I look at it, the more I like it.

I've seen poor examples needing quite a bit of work sell for about £375 on the bay & I've seen watch dealers asking as much as £1250. So roughly $570-1900. From what I've read about them, they're well admired by collectors but due to the case opening issues, not as popular as some other models. Just found out today that the bezel insert is made from bakelite !

From the extensive & sometimes boring research I did on this model, it seems a lot of owners have really struggled to find a watchmaker capable of opening this particular watch. Even my watch guy who has 40+ years experience has never worked on one, nor does he have the correct tools to open it. There's an article here that you might find interesting about opening the dress watch version. forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?173039-Omega-Cosmic-2000-Case-Opening-Fun-amp-Games

I have saved that link and in the fullness of time, when I own one of these, I'll know how it's done. Excellent. Seems like a really crazy way to put a case together.

It does seem a bit excessive doesn't it ? Apparently, some guys in the Royal Navy came up with the original ideas for the case design as they thought it improved water resistance. I think they'd had too much rum ! drunk-smiley-emoticon
