I'm doing a servicing for a customer's 6309-7049 from March '77. It was his dad's from new, it's all original everything, even the GL-831. Dial is dated February '77 ("72") on the back. It had one servicing mark in the caseback from '94. I just finished doing the disassembly, and noticed something - it's a 6306 case. The cutout for the crown is the big one, and the click ball is on the top left, not the top right. Is this unusual, or did early 6309-704x divers get this type case? Two crappy photos:

Spencer,
the 6306 cases really didn't differ from the 6309 cases of that time frame. I've handled just as many of each variant that had the larger crown recess cut. My guess is that Seiko used whatever they had on hand in both the 6306 and 6309 models in regard to cases. As the first run 6306 and 6309 case stock ran short there may have been a shift towards different tooling which spawned more inconstancy.
The latter non-Suwa models do tend to have much smaller recess cuts and more constantly throughout the "resist A" series. Most likely due to the cases being manufactured in Singapore and Hong Kong on different machinery. Depending on the production date of Jason's 6309, it could've been a first run case ('77 - early '79) or if it was parts watch cobbled together by one of our Philippine watch hackers then anything is possible.

Ah, you see I've always heard it presented as gospel that the 6306 cases had the bigger cutout and the click ball on the opposite side. This one is fairly early, March '77, so I'd wondered if early on there wasn't much variation. My near NOS one is '78 and it's got the smaller cutout and the ball on the right. Ditto for my June '79.

Spencer,
Goepel is in the eye of the beholder. Some would really like to have significant difference between the 6306 and 6309 models, but in the end he only real and proven difference is the 21 jewel movement and the cosmetic dial script. Nothing else sets them apart as much as people would wish to believe that there is other difference.
the click ball locations vary depending on the production date and location . I've handled post '81 non-Suwa variants that had them in the opposite side.
From what we've gathered over the years, Seiko tended to take short cuts and use remaining stock on new models. Whether that was a cost savings move on their part or just plain laziness we will never truly know.
As you and I discussed in the past, the late 6105 and early 6309s seem to have the same bezel inserts between them. The metal shim beneath the insert in the early 6309s to make up the bezel stack height difference makes perfect sense. The early 6309 inserts even mic up the same as the 6105 inserts.....just another topic altogether but we are definitely seeing part crossover between model series.

As Seiko can't provide any information about their past, our own experiences are the only way to get stuff confirmed. I've only bought first owner 6309's over the years and they are the only watches that can teach us. From my experience at least the Suwa dial 6309's came with both the smaller and larger crown cutout. The cases with the larger cutout were not exclusively made for the 6306.
Almost all 6309's I handled had the click ball on the right, only a few on the left. Like the larger crown cutout, this has nothing to do with being a 6306 case, I've seen 6309's with the clickball on the left.

I agree with the premis that excess or left over large cutout cases were used on the early 6309's. Clickballs I've seen on the left and right. What I've never seen is an unmolested 6306 with a small cutout recess for the crown.

Yep they exist, I recently bought some 6309 cases and one has two click balls. I have seen cases that had been added a second hole as the first was beyond repair (I guess they couldn't get the spring and ball out anymore). The case I have has two exactly identical holes that seem original.

Btw, is it possible to save this 6306/6306 case information somewhere on the forum? On the other forum (TOF) lots of great information just was wasted by not doing so. In this way we could slowly gather important information. Other upcoming themes could be bezel differences, crown differences, dial differences etc. Just an idea.

I thought that large knurling was early, fine knurling was late. This is what I've been told / have read. No idea if it's true.
