Figured I'd share... Spotted this (and another, maybe tomorrow) in a "grab bag" of crap watches at the thrift. There's usually at least something in these! I have a DOA tranzistorized ladies that I found interesting but not worth messing with. This on the other hand I found this pretty cool right away!
Popped the back and... Oh dear! The battery that was in there was too tall and someone had glued the back on!? Looks like automotive super-tack gasket maker, a fair amount on the movement as well 😞. Could that be what's left of the original gasket though?
Moving forward, I put probably another wrong battery in and started helping the balance with a few gentle shakes. Started running on its own after a few minutes of this. Flipping it over to see the dial I noticed the second hand acting as if it has epilepsy! So a set it aside and went to the web for some learning...
Movement is French- LIP-R184, same as the r148 with a date which was released Sept of 1962. These movements seem to have been produced well into the '70s.
The dial says France very small under the six.
Crown is signed "W"
On the battery retainer it reads Waltham Watch Company, Thirteen 13 Jewels, unadjusted, made in France
Case back reads "All Stainless Steel Case" and "WALTHAM". Inside it reads WALTHAM WATCH COMPANY SWISS B 350
When I peeked at it this morning it was still a little Shakey but had smothed out some and was keeping time! So I put on a worn out vintage lizard band (also French and in the same bag of crap) and put it on for the drive to work. 12 hours later it seems to have lost 30 seconds or so! Still stuttering away lol. I'm thinking I should remove the battery until I can strip and clean it, can't be good for it?
The movement does have when the crown is pulled, not sure if it's supposed to? And absolutely no quick set for the date. Can't even go back and forth around midnight. It just goes back. So I lucked out and only hand to wind it through about one week lol!
Here's some crappy phone pics. I've really gotta step up my camera game!
