Some of you may have noticed in the dedicated Pogue thread, but there’s talk of us kickstarting an annual day to celebrate Colonel William Pogue and the watch that is nicknamed after him.

For those that don’t know (and I doubt that’s anyone here), William Pogue was an American astronaut who launched into space in 1973 to do a stint on Skylab. During his early training he had not been given a NASA standard issue Speedmaster so he went out and bought himself a gold faced 6139-6005 (almost definitely a 6005) from the shop round the corner to help him time engine burns. He even put it on tick (layaway I think it’s called in the USA) as he didn’t have the cash to buy it outright. Pics of the receipt are available online.
When he launched into space he took his 6139-6005 with him as he was more used to it than the Speedy NASA had now issued him. There are some pics of him in space aboard Skylab wearing it. Some eagle eyed bod spotted this many years later, wrote to him, and he confirmed it. The watch then got nicknamed after him and a legend was born.

So now the history lesson is over; a few of us have been chatting about commemorating this. The day we’ve chosen is November 16th, as that was the day in 1973 that the 6139 became the first automatic chronograph in space - by accident as only Seiko can! The plan is that those of us that choose to all wear our Pogue’s on the day for the WRUW threads, and those with instagram or other social media’s hashtag the granny out of it.
#PogueDay #Skylab #NASA you get the idea.
And hell, Speedmasters (first watch on the moon) get #SpeedyTuesday EVERY WEEK! They even had Omega recently release a Speedy Tuesday LE watch! Surely we can have a #PogueDay once a year?
Who’s with my brothers and sisters? Who will fight the good fight? Who will... sorry, got carried away. If you’re up for it, spread the word on other forums you visit, between us I’m sure we can make this a thing!
Ps - no puritanical Pogue nonsense allowed. Any 6139-600x will do, in any color you have, from any year. Frankens are very welcome. In my mind there is only one watch in existence that is a true Pogue, and that watch was sold to an anonymous bidder at auction many years ago. (For about $6k, can you imagine what it would be now!!!)
If you got through all that, well done, make yourself a nice cup of tea, and join in if you would like to.
Cheers,
Pip
