Ooh, it's a birth year watch for me and I'm after a birth year... watch this space! Birth year for me too pip! Mind you, think of all the cheapo Seiko dress watches I could pick up off eBay for that amount, and I’m not a huge fan of Swiss anyway. Think I’ll let someone else have a chance of owning a piece of history.

Yeah, you’re right. They’re only guessing it’s a ‘68 and I have no way of knowing if it’s June or not. I’ll let it pass.

Honestly I can't imagine that that is in USD and/or real.
I can imagine one million dollars, I mean why not if you've got the cash to spare as an investment, etc. but for $17M you can buy a crazy nice yacht and have it staffed for many years.

Going through the listing it doesn't look like any went cheap. There are several it I'd have bought before the Newman; Patek's, Vacheron's, even the Dufour. Which people speculated would break $1m, it got close. Comments about it being the only one, of maybe 20, that keeps coming back up for sale. Another guy mentioned the movement wasn't very "clean" "if you saw it in person you'd know what I mean..."

WOW . . . that is stupid money.
I can't exactly see that as being a "good investment". Probably some rich douche with more money than sense and a "look what I can afford / Guess how much I paid for it" attitude.
Apparently there were more than one of the above mentioned douches driving the price well north of sanity.

"Well, I was knocked out after $750,000" said many people! Imagine telling someone "I was knocked out after $10 million". What a thing to say!
Here for posterity's sake are pics from the auction:
An amazing watch with an amazing provenance - mad props to the buyer! Bravo!!!

Frankly I find that amount of money being spent on a watch quite obscene, provenance or not.

Yes going from $1m to $10m on the first bid...I'd heard "Rolex" themselves may have been bidding. Which would not surprise me. While I wasn't a "Rolex Daytona" guy, nor will I ever been as famous, I think maybe I should add one to my collection...Rolex will be selling more watches because of this, that's for certain.
I don't think eBay would be the marker or place to buy or track Daytona Values but I imagine that while not inexpensive before they are now going to be even less so....

I should add that while many focus on "The Watch" or object it crosses into other collectors paths, like those that like racing or Newman. Hell people spend a lot on movie memorabilia. Harrison Ford's gun from 'Blade Runner" was almost $300k and you can't even get bullets for it....yet.

The new owner can even have the DNA tested to make sure it's really the Paul Newman watch. Why would the watch not have been cleaned and service before auction Also what's with the pusher circlips being on the outside of the case???

The auction is maybe $150000 worth of watch and $17602500 worth of nostalgia and fandom. Remember Steve Jobs 6431-6030 that sold for $42500? Even at $100 this would suggest 425 times it’s generous value.
Based on a market price of $150000 Paul Newmans name only generated 118 times it’s value in fandom.

Why would the watch not have been cleaned and service before auction Also what's with the pusher circlips being on the outside of the case??? Are you sure that the "crusty" stuff isn't rust? You see a lot of older Rolex (and even Seiko cases) rust and pit between the caseback and case sealing surfaces so I don't see why they couldn't also rust and pit on the outside.
