What is unfortunate about this situation is not someone carving up seiko cases to make something new. Since the manufacturer refuses to supply parts, the only means for restoration is the use of donors and by that method it is expected to be accumulating extra cases so here you have something new to do with all those cases and breathe new life into them. My opinion at least.
What is unfortunate is how much anxiety and energy of that forum at one time was dedicated to curtail motivated sellers/vendors from promoting their services in ways not acceptable to forum practice and here we have a Moderator/Administrator not only using the forum for personal financial benefit but also with a dedicated area for its promotion.

I just saw it is the first product ever available through the forum market. O M G. I did not realize that. Now I understand why this thread was started. I guess my question is not whether or not this is an appropriate venue to sell the product but rather what is the purpose of that forum market? I had always assumed it would forum branded shirts and mugs and what not. Hard to say where things are going to go given that the site is owned by a commercial company now. Ah well...

So it sounds like you're upset that some parts are so easily available and upset that some parts are not available...

Are you saying that in some cases, modding is even less acceptable than using AM parts? laugh1.gif yes I suppose so, but uniquely in this case because of the prestige and pedigree of the donor dial and hand set. Like I said before, we can't expect people to take seiko seriously if we don't take it seriously ourselves. To fair to the man; he has done quite a bit of fantastic re-engineering in producing these whether we care for the final results or not. I admire anyone with the machine skills to pull this type of thing off. It would be almost perfect if the Seiko logo was left off or replaced with TST or whatever.

As more time passes, I find that I've become less and less hard-core about Seiko purity in many cases. The hobby is meant to be enjoyed. If that means modded watches with whatever model dials etc, then so be it. If John wants to make quasi home-baked tunas and people buy them and like them, that's fine. If I had the money (and wasn't banned from SCWF) I might consider buying one.

As i have done manny times over the last month on a variety of topics......I was not going to comment on this. But, if you want a cheep reliable dive watch buy a SKX, i just picked up a new 009 for $105. If you are totally reliant on a mechanical time piece for diving then you live closer to the edge than I.. smiley-sport038 Well, they do say if your not living on the edge your taking up to much space! All joking aside. I like most modem scuba divers dive with a dedicated Dive Computer. Mine's a Suunto (of course it is) But, when I'm on holiday, diving no more then say 15 meters deep. Yeah I do just use a mechanical time piece. Most times it's this HHC Seiko 6309. No computer. Why? Coz I have my shit together & I work my dive time out before I hit the water. I work it out on Air. Then I dive on Nitrox (enriched Air) which gives me an extended dive time over Air. But I turn the dive, end the dive as if I am diving on Air. So, work it out, set the Bezel (mine has an AM insert, never mind) and there I go. If at any time the watch was to go tits up I would end the dive then. I quite like the "Old-School-Cool" & purity of just a single tank, just my watch solo dive. But that's just me.

I agree with what you said Spencer, but this in particular made my mouth water. Reminded me of the delicious tuna melt I had this weekend.
