So I took a quick break to regain some confidence after the "6309 no power" which I still have not gone back into, since I've worn it six days now, and tracked the time. Sometimes throughout the day. Gaining and loosing all week Started the week about 43s/d at one point Wednesday it was -88s/d and now Saturday morning it 72s/d so Monday to Sat it only gained 29 seconds....less than 5 s/d, and it kept ticking over the weekend...
Anyway I figured I'd look in the practice box for one of the 1686's I cut my teeth on. Very basic 17j center seconds. The watch needs a crystal but its full stainless so worth the extra.
Stripping and cleaning. First failure was the shock springs. Tiny little three prong jobs similar to the Seiko and Citizen style. After pinging the spring for the Balance, and since these were odd for the 1686's I grabbed another complete balance-cock, with a traditional Incabloc. The spring on the plate was even smaller so I used even greater care and my #5's. Immediately as I set it down on the mat it was gone! I had search and failed for the first spring and now the second. A hour lost! Okay no worries I'll grab another parts movement it has the traditional Inca too. (the next day I found both!)
Of course that breaks (prompting my other threads on their removal). I grab yet another, strip it completely, because the other parts have been sitting in Naphtha and the US since I started. I want to get this back together before I go home. Next thing, I failed to check the end shake on the individual wheels. After I put a few winds to the MS before installing the Palette, everything spins free, but come to a sudden halt!. I figure I'll strip it back down and finish the next night. As soon as I loosen, not remove, the bridge screws the remainder of the MS power spins the wheel... I say heck with it shoulder on. I know that all the parts were from the same model number 1686 but some were ST and some AS which shouldn't make a difference.
I then work for the next 30-40 minutes trying to get the balance-cock seated. At one point I had it and it was beating faster then any I'd ever seen before. (This did not come form the replacement plate, but another 1686). When I went to install the screw I jostled the cock and the balance stopped. I couldn't get it right. I boxed it all for the night. The next night I grabbed another balance (not cleaned) as soon as I set it in it started banging away! Didn't take a minute... Not being cleaned I pulled it and gave the other another try. I went in this time without a hitch! I got some weird TG reading, and think about the lack of end shake, so I loosen the bridge screws a bit more and it becomes worse. I then tighten them all the way, AMP drops but the lines look straight.
Okay wind it tight, let it sit over night. Place it on the TG and it is running so fast the TG just shows XXXX for s/d B.E. is .3 amp 210°. I demag it and look for touching coils and see nothing out of the ordinary?? Still XXXX I toss the other balance back on. The adjustment arm doesn't have much resistance and a slight pressure moves it too much, so a game is played back and forth, between the BE and S/D. In the end this is what I've come up with. I have dialed it and placed the hands on it. Its given up 20 seconds in 12 hours dial up... Strange because the DU reading on the TG should have had it gaining???
The difference in positions are kind of staggering to me. I think they should counter balance each other as its worn??? Before I case it and add a crystal to my Cousins order I'll go through it again. If I don't have end shake how do I correct that? Would that cause the variations in positions?
For ease I added a label to the TG before I snapped the pic. Sometimes letting it run through the screen a couple of times before I took the picture. Most times it would take several seconds from moving from one position to the next for the lines to straighten out...
