First I want to apologies for taking so long to get around to this, and again say "thanks for the gift!"
I was gifted this by a fellow member who saw my Swiss threads and thought I could use one more. I don't have my data sheet in front of me but if memory serves, I have, using eBay alone, documented in excess of 110 different combinations of AS/ST1686's under different dials. Some like this are marked on the bridge with their own numbers...Other say there could be more then 400-500 watches that used this movement! At any rate I'm always on the look out for all stainless models. The fact that the last one I tackled and have back on the bench is giving me fits does not deter me (too much). Elgin marked these 823 and the 7 jewel variety as 822. (Gruen marked their 552ss.)
This arrived with a group of others, it was ticking, looks like the stem had been replaced but had yet to be fitted. I have been successful at doing this once before but I needed to use a second stem to get it right. Patients, patients, patients. A little goes a long way. When nearing the end do not rush. Take it slow a thread or LESS at a time.
So as you can see the stem came long. The crown was loose so I removed the stem from the movement and made sure it was correct for the case and it seemed to have been made for it. Odds are it was the original. I then using just a small file and pin vice; took my time and filed, fit and filed some more until I was satisfied the stem would bottom into the crown, and the crown would not quite hit the case. I removed the crown added a drop of Loctite222 and reassembled, hoping for the last time. Of course as soon as I popped the back on I turned the watch over and saw I'd gotten something on the dial and crystal...(which needs to be replaced). I cleaned off the fugitive matter and closed it up. It seems to be running fine so I won't be messing with this one anytime soon.
Almost there!
I'd say this is good.
A little dab will do.
And Done!
While I take the photos in order and paste them into imgur in the same order for what ever reason they seem to scramble??? So this is pretty close.
