Hi. I now need reading glasses as well as driving glasses. Can I get some tips how you more 'mature' guys handle this hobby please? Clip on loops? Strong readers? Bi-focals? One of those giant lit magnifying glasses on a stand? I don't know where to start.
Also... Took my first watch apart yesterday, spotted the problem, fixed it, reassembled and it's now working on my wrist! I'm well pleased
Eye loupe. 5x used mostly. Works fine but I can't keep them in my eye. Cheapest Bergeon is far better than economy ones and not ridiculously expensive.
Made in USA flip down visor Donogan? Very nice. Very clear and good for casing stuff. Not so good for movement work. Does not work well for me with my glasses on. Says they work with glasses but not for me.
Stereo Microscope. Long working distance model. You will see things you never knew were there. My scope is 3x to 40x and about 6 inches of working distance at lower magnification.
I use regularly the loupe, flip down visor, scope. In that order.
For me i use flip down visor thingy for case work and larger movement work. I have loupes from 3 to 20. Bought cheapish ones and they fog up so I need to drill holes in the side which I plan to do this weekend as it goes. By the way, buy the wire loupe holders that go round your head then you don’t need to worry about holding in by squinting your eye, simples!
The real game changer for me too was a stereo microscope. Mine is fixed at x20 but I bought some different eyepieces to give me x40. I also recently bought an led ring light that attached to the microscope. Holy smokes I wish I’d done that sooner. As bklake says make sure you get one with good working distance and you will notice that what you think you had cleaned, you have more work to do.
I went with a double flip down 4x, 7x combined 11x. not very expensive. I do have some individual loupes that I use form time to time mostly for inspecting, but I need to go back and forth between them and my glasses.
