Brand new member from south Alabama. As my wife says, 'just what you need, another forum. Between watches, motorcycles and guitars, you'll never be able to retire'.................
I've actually already retired once and I'm 18 months from being vested in my current system, so maybe I'll slow down soon.
I've always admired nice watches, and tend to the clean, uncluttered look. While I appreciate what goes into a Rolex or a PP, they're not really my cuppa tea.
I've picked up some nice Seiko divers in the past few months, a Solar Diver, Spork, Mini Turtle, and an SKX007.
I also just got an inexpensive Seiko chrono and an Orient.
Now to start playing the watch band swap game.
For now, I'm on the lookout for a Lord Marvel or a KS. I need to do more research on those two, but I love their history and the amazingly clean design, especially the white faced KS models. I'm a little gun-shy about buying one on eBay, so I'll keep my eyes open here for a lead and/or guidance from the collective.

Welcome to the Sushi Bar, ast236 You've certainly come to the right place - lot's of knowledge about. A Lord Marvel (36k?) is a great little watch and the KS lineup is also very nice and clean, they conformed to the "grammar of design" for the most part.

After some careful consideration, I've reached the conclusion that I'm just not a collector.
I have three real hobbies plus my recent infatuation with nice watches.
I play guitar (poorly), I shoot a handgun (well), and I ride a motorcycle (not often enough).
Doing some recent inventory reveals I have more stuff than I'm comfortable with just sitting around gathering dust (metaphorically if not literally). No real harm except that I'm hoping to retire soon and the idea of having a bunch of money tied up in 'stuff' just isn't passing the smell test any longer.
I can probably make do with three guitars, a nice acoustic, a nice electric, and a cheap electric to practice with on the back porch or take on RV trips.
I have two motorcycles, one of which hasn't been ridden in months. In my line of work, we call that a 'clue'.....
Some of my guns have sentimental attachment, some are for work (I'm a Detective), and a few are just for fun. The rest are sitting in my safe, serving no purpose.
As to the new watch fever, I've realized I don't need five Seiko divers. Two will probably be sufficient. I don't need one of each colored variant of the new ABC Watch Company special limited edition.
Today I separated my watches into two groups. Group one includes watches with sentimental value and those that I just love to look at (for reasons only I understand). I have four watches with family ties and one that I got when I retired from my first department. Those stay, no questions asked. I also have a Seiko Spork and SKX007 (I know the 007 is not all that much, but I love it), a Seiko SARB035, and an Orient Sentinel. Group two is everything else and includes some nice pieces including a Seiko Mini Turtle and Solar Diver and some smaller, simpler watches.
Anyway, the point of all this rambling is that while I appreciate the collecting bug, it's not for me.
Group one watches are safe and group two watches need to sleep with one eye open..........
For those serious collectors here, more power to you. I hope the hobby brings you much joy.
I'm going to hang around and learn more about the hobby and at some point, maybe make a contribution or two.
Cheers and enjoy your weekend...........
Frank
