The 4520 looks like a re-dial.
edit: I’m wrong again.

The 4520 looks like a re-dial. I'm not so sure. Obviously it's hard to tell from low resolution photos, but it would be an awful lot of effort to go to to create this. Not least is the fact that the original 4520 dial would have applied Seiko and GS logos, and so there would be holes to fill. Based on the printing on the dial I could imagine this being done side by side with the 4580-7020. Dial code has been done exactly the same. It would also be a very strange thing to knock-up. My prediction, before we see the requested photos - No logo on the crown. Nippon Seiko case back. 4520-7020 model number on the inside case back. My money is on it being completely legit. Excited to find out more about it! Kind regards, Gerald.

Really, I don’t know. Fantastic if it is legit, but the age of the dial doesn’t seem to match the age of the case or movement. Also, I figured that the “humble” 4520 might not be Imperial material.
edit. Hmm, the dial has some age spotting. Very interesting. And I take that back about the 4520 movement.

There's also an imperial Lord Marvel, so something based on a regular GS isn't out of the question. 4520 and 4580 are also fundamentally the same movement of course, with both being used for the AOC. Remember that as far as we know (thanks to OP's research), these were apparently not made for the Imperial family, but as gifts from the Imperial family - big difference there. It wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that different "levels" of gift were handed out based on the rank of the recipient. C'mon scott - put us out of our misery already!

Hi All, thank you very much for your replies and help. I purchased it for a quite a modest amount from a chap who inherited it, I’ll add a few more photos to help use determine what it actually is, I’ve also got the strap that it came with whether I imagine it is a replacement but I thought I better not throw it out. Thanks Scott.

Thanks Scott. Might be worth asking the chap you bought it from if the person he inherited it from worked for the British (or other European) government? I very much suspect that this watch was gifted on the European tour that Emperor Hirohito embarked upon in 1971, as discussed earlier in the thread. Kind regards, Gerald.

Thanks for sharing the photos of the watch. Congratulations, that is a fantastic find.
As others have mentioned it would be super interesting to see if the previous owner has any insight into the history for the watch.
