When my uncle and his wife came over from California a couple of years ago, he very generously gifted me the 7006-5000 he received for his 21st birthday present. By way of replacement he’d treated himself to a blue-dialled two-tone Seiko Coutura which, whilst not quite to my taste, looked a nice solid piece of kit.
Earlier this week I was surfing the web, as I often do, and noticed that a high street jewellery chain had one of the Coutura range on sale. After a bit of deliberation I decided to relieve my PayPal account of some of its funds, and took the plunge. And I’m glad I did!
The latest addition to my collection is the SSC627P9. I must say that the photos taken on my iPhone really don’t do this justice, but here’s some shots.
It’s quite a large watch at 45.5mm case width, but it doesn’t feel that big, and at 12.27mm tall, it will easily fit under my shirt cuff. The dial has a split window ‘big date’ indicator and subdials for seconds, chrono minutes and a (pretty useless) 24 hour indicator. One neat feature is that the chrono minute subdial doubles up as a power reserve indicator when the chrono isn’t running (I was surprised this arrived on full charge as well). All this sits beneath a flat sapphire crystal, and it’s water resistant to 100m - not that I’m planning getting it wet...
I had to remove 4 links for my puny wrist, and thankfully this bracelet doesn’t use the pin and collar set up - it’s a ‘W’ bracelet code so uses a waved split pin. The bracelet itself feels nice and solid, and the links taper down to the clasp.
The mix of polished and brushed finish to the links gives a nice contrast, and the way the top of the link is fashioned catches the light such that it almost looks like a black inlay.
The chrono pushers blend in nicely with the crown guards, which doesn’t add too much to the case width, and the cabochon crown is a nice touch as well.
The dial colour is officially grey, but to me it looks more like a champagne colour. The semi-skeleton hour and minute hands are lumed, as is the small ‘arrow point’ mid-way down the chrono sweep hand, and the chapter ring has lume spots at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.
The lume is actually pretty decent as well -
I don’t recall seeing many posts featuring the Coutura range on here, so maybe they don’t appeal to everyone’s tastes. Sure, I probably wouldn’t have picked this up if it hadn’t been on sale, but with over £200 off the RRP I figured it was worth checking out. And I’m glad I did - this one’s a keeper.
Thanks for reading folks 😉
