I didn’t expect this to finish where it did. I subsequently read a discussion about this model that went back a few years. Very unusual. I expect the sun-like symbol represents hours, and moves clockwise from 6 to 6 over a 12 hour period. Seconds and minutes functioning conventionally.

This is my ultimate grail and one I've been chasing for around ten years, I've only seen 5 in that time and should have grabbed the first as it was under $1000, they are now well beyond my reach. They have a "Sun and a Moon disc" representing the day and night when the sun goes down a moon appears on the opposite side and then you know it's night time... so Sun up at 6am and down at 6pm etc, this one is showing the Sun on the display dial so daylight and it's between the 10am and 11am mark with the minute hand at 34ish and sweep hand at 29ish so 10:24am Just a lovely and truly special watch, I hope someone we know bought it.

Rod is right about how these work, and that they're quite rare. They're depicted and described in one of the Dragonfly books as follows (with terrible/amusing google translate doing the legwork):
Watch made by Kameido factory has many products with special naming other than the original pet name. There are some of them introduced here. "Cronos", but there are many special pet names, the most famous one among them is "Sun and Moon" on the left picture. The fan window at 12 o'clock is in place of the hour hand. As you can see from the continuous photographs of the photo, the sun and the moon are replaced at 6 o'clock in the afternoon in the morning and at around 6 pm in the afternoon and it is supposed to go around in 24 hours.
One showed up on YJ in April and I sent it around to some of my watch buddies, and Akable pointed out that it had a terrible redial (in my excitement I hadn't even noticed). It nevertheless sold for over $6,000 USD, so this end price isn't all that shocking. I clearly will never own one!

We really need someone who speaks japanese to translate those books. I seem to remember a guy on here who were from Japan.
I saw that one too, but never expected it to sell for that much! Cool little piece.

I have a couple, the ones I found most interesting. Vol. 1, 3, 5 and 9. I have not seen scans anywhere online of these, but again, a translator would be needed to get the most out of it.

I saw that another one of these was up for auction on YJ. The price was escalating strongly, but I missed the end of the auction - and the seller has deleted the “completed” price. Did anyone see what it sold for?

I would recommend picking up the two updated re-issues from 2012. The "Automatic" re-issue contains the original volumes 5 and 9 plus a few new pages on the first Seiko automatic, and the "Crown Cronos Marvel" re-issue contains the original volumes 1, 3 and 7 plus some extra pages about the most special Seiko and Credor hand-winders. Between the two books, they cover just about every important mechanical reference that Seiko issued from the late 50s until the mid/late 70s.

The latest instalment of this exciting series. I think that this was the same one that I made reference to in a previous post - same seller anyway.

Not too bad if you get them directly from Japan. About $50 for the "automatic" re-issue that contains two books, and $75 for the "crown cronos marvel" re-issue that contains three books. When you consider that the original versions were $20-25 each, it's about the same price. Plus the re-issues are really nice hardcovers and the originals were flimsy softcovers. Also, good luck finding the originals (especially 5 and 9) for the original MSRP of $25. They're rare and collectable now, so they're going for at least $50-60 each now.

The ones I’ve been seeing on YJ are coming up more than that, usually about £75 which is maybe $85. Maybe my searches are only hitting the commercial sellers or something. I’ve got a couple of the series but not the Seiko ones I’m after yet which are the ones you mentioned.

You should be able to find the automatic series for $50-60 and the chronos, etc series for $75-80 on Yahoo jp. When you find them for a good price, they're totally worth buying.

Interesting, he mustn't have like the price ..so I'll expect to see it again, There are some strange thing happing on Yahoo, it seems that a seller can cancel an auction (or at least the highest bid) after the auction has finished.

Seller can set a minimum bid price, after the auction ends it seems a bug displays the set amount if no bids reach it.

Another Sun and Moon sold on YJ. Prices are still strong! And Erik Strickland showed this one in his feed a day or two ago. Glad it went to one of the good guys who shares his rotation of rare birds with the community.
