Tore several hard drives apart for the IT guy up front, and cannibalized the magnets to use around the plant to hand drawings and such. I don;t know a lot about magnets but these seem very strong. Without having to scan through a bunch of what I already know, or think I know. Does anyone have any knowledge about the type used. These magnets will stick to each other front to back and back to front? I though magnets ad poles on either side N/S north to north or south to south repelled where the opposite attracted? If I try and and slowly bring them together face to face the seem to repel and once they get close enough though they snap shut? If I do the same back to back can't feel the field repelling or attracting but they will stick together.
The reason for all this is I need to remove some security tags on donated items at a homeless shelter my daughter's suckered me into working at. I remember starting out here and reading about guys taking their watches to retailers to have them "demaged" which had me thinking a magnet would work to remove the tags. Youtube confirms. Though they don;t say how strong the magnet needs to be. I've read you can stack magnets to a point increasing the pull strength I just don't know if that works with this type of magnet??? Since there doesn't seem to be a clear n/s?
TIA

If you have not removed the actual magnet from the 'mu metal' keeper that could be why they are acting strangely.

Sounds like maybe you should take off your watch while you work on them.

Sounds like maybe you should take off your watch while you work on them. Funny but I had thought of that, credit cards i my wallet, and how close tot he PC I dare get. I did read about people trying to erase or damage enclosed hard drives as away of getting rid of the data, since everyone keep them away from magnetic memory...reading a few things where people tried to see how power full you would need, and even some "really" powerful magnets wont damage the data on a drive. They could damage the ?Stylus? I guess I was thinking the top or bottom was a different pole. but odds are since it's oddly shaped it cold be the "sides" that are directional...When they poles are opposite they can snap shut very quickly and pinch fingers!

Careful working around rare earth magnets if they're big enough. They can snap back together with such force and pinch flesh off the tip of your finger. Seriously.
I use a little coin sized rare earth magnet when testing silver bullion to help sniff out fake coins and bars.
