Not sure of your guilty pleasures whether it's reading the National Enquirer in the checkout line or rubber necking at a car accident but here's something that y'all might find interesting. It would appear a YouTuber from down under has got himself into a bit of hot water. www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=722353

Very interesting read (I see our own tritto chimed in as well). The thing I find staggering is that there are people who pay that kind of money for a watch (ANY watch) through social media. In fact, I find it staggering that there are people who pay that kind of money for a watch. Period.

It's been an interesting 24 hours watching this unfold via the Rolex Forum and various FB groups. Very entertaining.

In fact, I find it staggering that there are people who pay that kind of money for a watch. Period. I would agree. Sending that amount of money to a YouTuber instead of an AD is odd. Much like the salaries earned by professional athletes, I can't comprehend that level of exchange. I hadn't noticed Tritto's comment before and upon reading his remarks, I can see where greed can corrupt. It will be interesting whether Chris goes public with an explanation.....definitely a slippery slope in social media. Personally I doubt it particularly in this 24hr news cycle we're subjected to.

There is some serious money flashed on these FB forums and the lack of Rolex availability means some of them are willing to pay well over retail for some models. There's also plenty of greed from flippers who have access to new Rolex via an existing relationship with an AD. The biggest Australian watch-related FB sites (Australian Watch Forum and Australian Watch Buy Sell Swap) seem to be dominated by a cartel of dodgy fellows (and some genuinely good guys). Chris Essery is the Admin of AWBSS and he's been defended by one of the chief moderators of AWF - who is now revealed to have previously spent time in jail for insider trading. It's hard to believe there isn't a core group of dodgy people that are in cahoots.

In fact, I find it staggering that there are people who pay that kind of money for a watch. Period. One thing I’ve worked out is you don’t mess around near tritto - he will call you out. Also don’t mess around near longbike as he will hunt you down and turn you into sushi! But on a serious note: yes I agree that 29k is a ridiculous amount to spend via a forum. I suspect there are plenty of people who think you’d be crazy to spend approaching 1k on a forum and lots of us do that. It’s just a matter of scale. We are all crazy when it comes to watches. Greed is greed whatever the numbers. And although the guy appears to be a scumbag for all I know he’s desperately trying to pay medical bills for a child. There’s always a bigger picture.

Rolex would literally be getting a hard-on for this sort of stuff and would use it as justification to only use an AD and be on a wait list for years...oh and by the way, if you're not buying 10, you're too poor for us. What a crappy market segment. I'm glad im not in it. In other news, I read through the forum thread at the Rolex forum. I'd conclude that a bunch of the guys there are naive at best, stupid at worst. There is absolutely no way I'm giving 28k to anyone sight unseen. The whole matter could have been avoided with the cost of a plane ticket. ArchieLuxury cops a lot of crap, but he does that part right. I guess it's a word of warning to people splashing that kind of money around, just buy a damn plane ticket and pick it up in person. In typical Rolex Forum style, the thread has devolved into a slanging match with people banned and others being castigated for not reading the full 1100 posts before commenting. I'm so glad our Seiko forums are much more civilised.

They're totally toxic. But hey, culture is always defined by those at the top and the business culture of Rolex is totally toxic. stopped reading at about 750 post in were there any new revelations/victims? or just another 400 additional posts of people bickering? We see so little of our mods having to moderate that I'm not entirely sure who the supreme being is. Yeah, I know they must be doing good work in the background, but it's a credit to them and the members that their touch is rarely seen.

You and me are the only real members Trist, all the other posters are the mods pretending the forum is busy to sell huge amounts of advertising; you don't really think there's all these people who like junky old Seiko's do you?!! And to be honest I think I may also be a message creation bot... Johnny Five is Aliiiive!

I figure if I keep to the meat and potatoes of the forum and stay clear of the blue room and just "glance" at the off topic, I'm generally pretty well behaved. Hell on the WTF I got a warning and had a thread locked, from back and forth over how many positions there were? In watch lingo. I said there were 8; six positons of the crown and dial, one for Iso, and one for temp...Only to have a guy pull out an Elgin that said adjusted to hot and cold so it's nine!...which is temp of just varying degrees...back and forth, I pullout a reference book, he pulls out a book...Anyway I have posted more here than any other of the forums I've ever joined...The guy seemed like a blow hard having a youtube channel that he showed how he could spot a fake watch without even holding it, a good fake would take under a minute...so guys commented that he had said fake only to have AD's say legit...Anyway I'm glad I'm hanging with you all here.
Now that I know you guys know stuff about Rolex I don;t feel the need to join another forum for advice, when that day comes...
