Hi, my name is Gino and I live in Melbourne Australia.
I’m a Cell & Molecular Biologist working for a BioPharmaceutical company. I guess I’ve had a general interest in watches since I received a Seiko “bullhead” chronograph (6138-0040 brown face) for my 15th birthday. That was a milestone birthday for me since I also received my first camera as well, a Canon FTb 35mm film camera. I’ve had a passion for photography ever since. The year was 1975 and it was our first trip back to Italy (from where we migrated when I was a year old) as family and sadly it was a year after my mother passed away. My relatives in Italy spoiled me with some pretty lavish presents. I loved that Seiko Bullhead and wore it every day until I turned 20.
I then entered the digital age with a Seiko Digital Chronograph A259-5010 that my dad bought for me for my 20th Birthday. I was at University then and wore it for most of the 80’s. Time flew (digitally), I married, we have 2 great kids, now 24 and 20.
My latest Seiko is a “UFO recraft” Automatic SRPC13K1 with a beautiful teal face which replaced a vintage 1960 Omega Constellation I wore for a while. I fell in love with the “UFO" reissue the moment I saw it (the Omega never came back on). I rekindled my passion for film photography a year ago and got myself a vintage Hasselblad camera (the camera I lusted after as a teenager). This is the original “moon camera” and I have become fascinated with the association of Hasselblad with the space program partly because of the hype of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 2019. It’s rubbed off on my watch interests too and a month ago I bought a (used) Omega Speedmaster Professional “moon watch”. It’s a lovely watch but it seems to have exacerbated my watch fetish and I have pulled out my two vintage Seiko’s from storage and have a strong desire to resurrect them and wear them again. They need some TLC and I am looking to get them lovingly restored. Funny, holding them in my hands after so many years after being packed away, they bring back so many great memories of an exciting time in my life and family who are no longer with me and I realise these little gems are two of my most prized possessions (I wish I had kept my Canon FTb). I just ordered a copy of Sadao Ryugo's book -The history of the seiko 5 sports speed-timer- Birth of the Seiko automatic chronograph. Waiting for it to arrive any day now. Something tells me I’m about to start on a bit of a vintage Seiko discovery journey! Anyhow, that’s how I got to join the WristSushi forum. I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of you here and perhaps making some new friends and learning a lot about these little marvels!
See you around!
