Just returned from a shopping trip to our local Sainsbury’s as we’ve just come back from a week away and needed groceries. You’d be forgiven for thinking the country was at war! Bare aisles all over the place. Some of the (in some cases completely) bare food ones included - dried pasta, rice, dried noodles and Pot Noodles, pasta sauces, curry sauces, virtually every kind of tinned product, savoury biscuits, beer, butter, cheese, chocolates and sweets, crisps. Fancy a Dolce Gusto coffee? Sorry, all gone. Not a single box or packet of tissues or kitchen roll. The grand total of 12 packets of toilet roll. Hand sanitiser? Forget it. I’m sure it’s the same in every other supermarket around here. It was the same in the Midlands where we were last week. People bulk-buying the craziest things, such as glasses wipes and Schweppes Lemonade. Now I know we should all be like Boy Scouts and ‘be prepared’ for a worsening of the coronavirus outbreak, but surely to God people could be a bit more sensible about their buying habits? Utter phuking madness

Norwegians seem to retain their senses better than most during crises (most likely due to good genetics and a sound upbringing) so no lunacy here yet. Stores are beginning to run low on toilet paper (honestly, why is THIS the one thing that people feel the compulsive need to stockpile?) but the shelves are far from empty.
Hope everyone is able to acquire adequate supplies. IMO anyone stockpiling a 5-years supply of provisions and not leaving anything for others should be drawn and quartered.

My mum lives with me and I can tell you being low on incontinence pads and bog rolls is a high stress situation for a 83 year old woman . I think we can adapt as she was telling me how when she was a girl they used to cut up newspapers and hang them on a nail in the outside bog. Oranges used to be wrapped up in soft tissue and it was a treat to get hold of the stuff to wipe you arse on. I did ask if she ended up with a black arse hole from the newsprint. We really do have a cushy life in 2020 and panic like hell over the possibility of being without all the "essentials" we ordinarily take for granted.

I went to the Somerville, Massive Two Shits Star Market last night to pick up a few things. Bread, pasta, and dried beans were completely wiped out. Toilet paper? Forget it. Even the produce section was nearly bare. Frozen veg. all gone. too.

The toilet paper hoarding is because people are scared shitless. 🤔
It's been like this in the states for a week now. This is the type of things that verify to me that there's a very fine line between civilization as we know it, and a complete collapse.

Around here it is toilet paper and bottled water.
City water is free.
I would never pay for water.
Even if the water supply got tainted just boil it.
I mentioned this at work and someone said if the power goes out and people who have a well their pump won't pump water.
My reply was "Their toilet won't flush either for them to use their toilet paper stash"

How many times can a person wipe their ass? I don't get it
Early on, I bought a bunch of essentials for my folks. They have plenty of healthy organic canned good, tuna fish and whole wheat pasta. Lots of fresh chicken that I froze for them. Bread was an issue so I bought a bunch of whole grain which I froze for them too. My mother complained it wasn't organic. I told her to be thankful she has the luxury of bitching about it Not that I expect an issue with water like with hurricanes, I bought them 6 cases just in case, cheap enough, and I can always use it when this calms down. The basement is stocked too with extra and the fridge is busting at the seams. They had plenty of fresh produce and milk delivered from the market. Whole Foods market is still delivering. Again my mother complained about them not having arugula They have their flu and pneumonia shots so that's good. I was able to score a case of hand sanitizer and tubs of disinfectant wipes a month ago. I figured it doesn't hurt to have and I know my folks are well taken care of for piece of mind. The key was buying at less frequented places.
My folks are 75 and 78. They have all their faculties and mobility so they're aware of not venturing out to too far and into crowded places and to wash and sanitize regularly if they do go out. It'll put a crimp on their lifestyle for a bit, but they have plenty to do at home to occupy themselves with reading, Netflix, chores, relaxing outside in the backyard with the unseasonably warm weather, etc...

I feel sorry for the elderly. Here in Australia many can only shop once a fortnight when they receive their measly pension, they can’t afford to stock pile. These are the people that are most vulnerable and hygiene is paramount.

You have an electric toilet, Josh? Mine's one of those old fashioned ones we used to have back in the 20th century.

Ah, so the rest of the western world is experiencing the great toilet paper panic of 2020 also. People are stupid. That said, we're almost out so I'll have to brave the supermarket eventually. We have a decent supply of flour, rice and pasta under the stairs anyway - the Mrs likes to buy in bulk. Right now I'm just pissed that my trip interstate to see Iron Maiden in May is almost certainly off.

I don't understand the tp thing at all. We shop at a warehouse store where we buy certain items in bulk. My mom asked about a tagging along as she needed a few things. This was long before the whole hording thing we are seeing now maybe the second week of January. I think the store sells the tp in 50 packs...my mom bought 3! When my 1st wife asked why she needed so much, she replied I don't know when you'll take me again...We thought this is funny because; my MIL only will buy 1 roll of single ply at a time..."cuse I may be dead before I need another one". Now my mom lives alone, and if she uses a roll a week, about what my MIL uses, she has 3 year supply! I know where I'm going if we run out...
Supply chain is already affecting business as there aren't enough 40' sea containers coming in from the far east to empty to reload for shipments back out...Usually there is such a over stock they sell them as "one way" condition to be used for portable storage for under $3000...
Good luck to everyone..."Stay Calm and Carry On" as they say over the pond...

First confirmed case in my town of approx 22000. Schools closed till the 27th. Wife working from home till end of the month. I bought enough supplies to last us a while, not insane shopping, but enough beans, pasta, cereals, crushed tomatoes to manage if we have to. Making decisions to proceed smart and hoping for the best.
Rob.
Have 14 rolls of tp, but I've lived in India long enough to know that washing your backside is an option too.

Just got back from Tim Horton's/Wendy's. Normally quite busy with folks circling to find tables. This morning was a ghost town because all the churches apparently are closed because they have no toilet paper

We're always so perplexed at the insatiable desire of westerners for TP during times of crisis. We're constantly saying to each other: "People do realize that hosing down your bum works just as well, if not better, than TP... right?"

They just announced that restaurants and bars are closed and can only serve carryout...Our Governor was pissed seeing young people out celebrating ST. Pats after canceling all the parades...I feel for those that need the tips to live on.
Getting spooky out there. I went to the big box tonight looking at a new computer the place was a ghost town I had my choice of registers...there wasn't any paper products to be had and so maybe everyone stayed home?

Say what you will buddy but I swear I saw you over here at the Pac & Run holding old folks up for single ply with a hatchet and a smile.

Popped into the supermarket at lunchtime because we're out of a few things. No toilet paper to be seen. Picked up three packets of my favourite spaghetti and two packets of antiseptic wipes. The self checkout would only let me buy two packs of pasta and one of the wipes. Stupid. Lost sale there.

Complete chaos here in CA, people are lining up for hours for a shot at the TP supply at the local Costco warehouse stores.
Schools are closed for 4 weeks, Governor has just closed bars/clubs, and told restaurants to cut capacity in half.
I'm working from home, just makes sense if at all possible.
People are such sheep, just following the crowd in a panic, having no real reason as to why.

Same chaos here in NY. We went to Costco on Saturday (mid to late afternoon) to see if we could get some extra meats for the freezer. It was not that bad but there was NO TP on the floor but the guy said they were not out. I didn't need any so no BFD for me.
Went to a local Shop Rite on Friday and my wife went to local Stop N Shop an hour earlier. Not a single package of chicken in either store. Went back to SR on Sunday and the meat counters were re-stocked.
Don't panic people . . . unless you live in the UK. More in the next post.
