I turned out my light which was on all day and evening and happened to walk over to my watches in the dark and saw this constellation of lume. I never noticed it and thought it was pretty cool. I have a few boxes and this was stacked on top. You can see the lume on my 1967 Rolex Submariner is still working. The blue lume on the Seiko 5. The 6139’s barely show. The gold Pogue just about shows. The lume on the 6105 on the left is almost kicked. Same with the Jumbo 6138. Anybody else ever notice it?

I'm the guy with the maglite, charging the lume, before I sit in wonder at the lovely glowy things before me.

Too funny, I took one of these a couple years ago as well: Not an exactly paired lights on/off shot like yours, but the box they reside in:

Nice. I notice mine when I bring the box of solar watches in from a bout of sunlight. As they are all 'modern' the lume is still very strong on them so they glow even in indoor light.

Not an exactly paired lights on/off shot like yours, but the box they reside in: That's a great cabinet you have there. I've been monitoring eBay for a while to find an antique one similar to yours. Searching retired watchmaker belongings as well as antique apothecary cabinets.

Would have startled me thinking they were the mouths of some glowy sea worms.

Searching retired watchmaker belongings as well as antique apothecary cabinets. It is a Machinist Chest, manufactured (still to this day) in Dayton Ohio by Gerstner. They were the original toolbox provider for the Wright Brothers. I've restored about 6-7 of these for various people.

A little project to do outside in the Spring weather while home confined.

It is a Machinist Chest, manufactured (still to this day) in Dayton Ohio by Gerstner. They were the original toolbox provider for the Wright Brothers. I've restored about 6-7 of these for various people. Well I took your advice and found this guy on eBay that I monitored and sniped at the end. There were three other bidders each competing with each other over 10 days. I'm envisioning some crotchety curmudgeon old retirees into woodworking I probably pissed them off.
The dimensions are perfect for my dresser top and the drawer measurements are perfect for my watches and supplies. It's 10" deep and the drawer height is 2"
I will remove the handles and clean the chest of grime, touch up any nicks and see how it looks. I want to keep the vintage character and stain. If happy, I'll coat with a couple layers of polyurethane to lock it in and give a low gloss sheen. I will leave the handles as they are and source a couple screws to replace the missing. I will re-line the interior with a nice anti-slip cabinet liner you can get at Home Depot.

Not a Gerstner brand chest, but a nice piece! Should hold a LOT of watches.

Not a Gerstner brand chest, but a nice piece! Should hold a LOT of watches. Thank you. Wasn't looking for a particular brand. GarrettWade.com has some nice Gerstners on sale and low shipping charge.
I was looking for an antique, nice condition, well built, certain look, and viable for the intended purpose and location of it. It has a pin inside that locks the bottom two drawers when you lock the top.
Couple more shots. Thinking it should look nice when properly gone over. It'll make a nice outdoor project while holed up in the house for the foreseeable future Just gotta find some screws. Probably change them all out instead of trying to find just a few to be an exact match. I'll play around. See what I have first or my dad.

As a note to those seeing this later, the (new) Gerstner International chests are made in China on contract for Gerstner. The Gerstner chests (no International in name, both new and 'experienced') are/were made in Dayton, Ohio by hand.
I've reconditioned quite a few of these vintage boxes, and found them (in the US) on craigslist and Ebay.

Took delivery today. As described. I think it’s going to clean up nicely! The bottom trays come out. I’ll strip off the dirty lining and already bought red felt for it. It’s crudely but solidly hand built. I have to tap in a couple nails and replace a screw or two. Drawers slide effortlessly. I’m going to gently clean the wood with #00000 steel wool and mineral spirits. See how it looks and then a couple thin coats of low gloss polyurethane. I’m not looking to restore the wood just clean. I want that antique character of it intact.
