..rotating bezel completed
I started to realize I or no one can buy all the watches one's wanted - no matter how beautiful these watches were.Just can't
So, In about 2 years ago, i tried to find a theme That I like & could built up a themed collection - the result is per captioned title. There is only 8 watches in the whole collection but That is it, that is ALL. U cannot find another model out of the captioned title.
Building collection on a theme has the advantage of
1) knowledge are highly-linked but not scattered
2) watches added fit seamlessly into the collection theme
3) Aesthetically, when similar things are put together, they tend to magnify the beauty.
For Seiko sake, it could be diver vertical, 6138 horizontal variant, 6139 horizontal variant, 6139 pepsi variant, 1964 Olympia's sport, 5717/9 horizontal variant, Bellmatic, KS, GS, 60's dress only, sushi diver, tuner diver variant, Seiko chrono development vertical, etc, etc.
I started off with the theme of 60's skin diver, dark face with external bezel & find the total number too much. so, I trim down to the captioned.
Pls note I do not collect for the sake of completing a collection, incidentally, I really like the design of Daini over Suwa. I do think these divers are beautiful.
Majority of the collection is composed of 5126 - which is JDM only model & not as frequently seen as the 6106 or 6119. 5126 also use transmission wheel in automatic winding like the Swiss calibers & not using the magic lever.
The last thing I do now is to complete the mere 8 watches with their original bracelets. a 8090 original bracelet is on its way.
Pls pay attention to the rotating bezel design of each model which I think it is where the $ is.
All dials except the 7005 are in original unmolested condition. I would like to play it as the Rolex way. A seasoned collector would stay away from a clean dial Rolex 6200. A 70 yr old watches is impossible to get NOS dial. They look for corroded hands, wear, patina and dirt that matches with the coverall age of the watch and ORIGINALITY . Many Seiko collectors dislike the wabi-sabi dial, I had thought for a long time B4 i decided to play it in the Rolex way.
My watch repairer said he is reluctant to repair these "cheap" watches - which make me unhappy.
But I reckon the $ value of these sports divers has not yet been fully realized yet. AND YES. Rolex's sports vintage diver's design & beauty is very very good. Its oyster case design & screw down crown has a huge advantage over for example Seiko's counterpart.
It is unfortunate that the 60's Seiko's are 7/10 in fairly poor condition when found, the small, non screw crown is the major attribute of water ingress IMO. Owners of Seiko also tended NOT to keep their watches as good as the more expensive Rolex.
However, Seiko do have its own merits IMO & deserve more respect.
