My second post on the forum, after shouting on the board!
Really just starting into my watch obsession. I have a handful of watches that I have collected over the years inadvertently, family pass downs, etc. I started actively wanting to learn about watches about a year ago, and basically have just followed my eye and let the breeze take me where it may when I have time. I have mostly settled on Seiko as my focus, although I do really like Omegas as well. I would like to learn more about some of the other off-beat swiss brands (Eterna, Glycine, UG, Zodiac, etc.), but not really sure I have any interest in buying until I understand the market quite a bit more, since the monetary barrier to entry tends to be a bit higher.
I would say that I am mostly into vintage Seikos and tool watches at this point. I have a handful of recent Seiko divers, but I am trying to figure out how to start buying worthwhile 6138 and 6139s. I actually dont care much for the gold face Pogue, but really like a lot of the other 6138 variants. I would really like to find an all original panda and jumbo in good condition, but I am guessing that is a pretty common desire, based upon current scarcity and prices. I am also really interested in the vintage divers Silverwave to 62MAS to 6105 to 6309. I like some of the King Seiko Hi-beat cushion cased vintage pieces as well. Of course I also like a lot of the more recent divers and tool watches from Seiko, all the way up the GS's.
I am also interested in picking up all the skills to refurbish watches .... cases, movements, crystals, etc. I am an engineer so I am good at fixing things and figuring out how they work, but it is yet to be seen whether I have the patience and steady hands necessary to work on watches. I have a batch of vintage Timex and Seikos that I bought bulk a few day ago on the way, and I am planning on starting to work on these. It is mostly junk watches, but there is a pretty beat up 6139-6012 in there, as well as a couple of the more 'desirable' (which is not saying much when it comes to Timex) Marlins and Vicounts, so there should be stuff to tinker with, that I wont feel bad screwing up. I will probably work on the cosmetic aspects of the 6139, and see if it runs at all and how badly, then consider sending it off for serivce, or maybe giving it a go myself.
Currently my collection is pretty small and consists of a SKX007, SRP777, SRPC93, SSC081, 1975 Rolex 1601 Datejust, 1980s Vostok Komandirskie, 74 Caravelle Digital, 2002 Accutron Breckenridge, and a couple of Skagen watches.
Always looking for good places to look for watches, as well as good advice on Seiko service people and general watch refurbishment and watchmaking.
