So here’s the story. My folks go to a yard sale and buy some small trailers for use around their yard. Well, the guy running the yard sale convinces them to buy a handful of old watches and watch parts for an additional 5$. He wants to round up the sale to an even couple of 20’s. My dad agrees. After all Jon likes watches, maybe he’ll get some enjoyment out the old watch stuff. The guy literally grabs a handful of watches; out of a pile of watches he was trying to sell for 15$ total. Well, my folks come over for a visit and and say “oh yeah we have some watches for you.” My mom proceeds to pull a bunch of old watches out on the bottom of her purse where she had been carrying them around for weeks. I start checking them out while my dad relates the story. And low and behold, there’s a Seiko 6217-8001 62 MAS. I recognized it cuz, we’ll I’d been considered buying and homage watch since the real thing was WAAAAAY too far out of my budget. So here I am. I’ve now got and original 62 Mas, form March 1967. It has significant water damage to the dial and movement. So my big questions are. How should I get it fixed? Where could I get it fixed? How much will getting it fixed cost me? Here’s pics to show you the condition it’s in.

Very nice find.
It's not going to be cheap and will take a while but it could/would be a nice watch at the end of the day.

What a great story! As Don says, it won’t be the cheapest to restore but will be worth it. The usual suspects would be a good place to start. I think SK has a waiting list of a gazillion years though so maybe give him a swerve.

Firstly, congrats! It’s like an urban myth - went to a garage sale got a 62MAS for $5 !! Duncan, aka The Watch Bloke in the UK, once rebuilt a 62MAS for me where the movement was even more rusted than yours. Fabulous outcome. I say meanwhile just buy a cheap 6206 runner and use that, the date will be covered up, and you will be up and running. Yes the dial needs attention and a relume but lots of guys here can do that - including Duncan. All in all you have a fantastic project ahead of you !
Quik pic of the 6217A Duncan actually rescued (albeit with spares galore, some NOS and others pilfered from a 6206A):

Do you mean like eBay, cousins and places like that? Or are talking about professional watch makers? I honestly have never talked to a watch maker and wouldn’t know where to find one in the U.S. let alone in the Pacific Northwest. And who is SK? I’m not familiar with that reference. Thanks for the comments 👍

Thanks for the advice! I have been watching eBay and I’ve heard 6200 models have some interchangeable parts. I wasn’t sure what to do about the dial. I was under the impression that reluming would negatively impact the watches collectibility. Thanks again for the advice.

Thanks for the comments 👍 SK is Spencer Klein (klein vintage repair) but I don t think he started to take new orders yet. I ve had very very good experiences with Adrian at Vintage Time Australia but check with him also on the waiting time. I highly recommend him. The Watchbloke in UK serviced couple of my watches too with good results. Not sure on the waiting time either. Mike at my retro watches might help as well. Guy Jeffrey at Rexwortywatches also does wonders in terms of luming Good luck with the project!

I was under the impression that reluming would negatively impact the watches conductibility. Thanks again for the advice. When a dial has the situation this 62MAS has, reluming - done right - adds to the value. Period. Get it done by a pro. As others have said Guy and John and Duncan and Adrian are all masters, I probably left out some other worthy pros.

The 6216, 6219 are high jewel version and are well priced for an upgrade and parts watches. As others stated Duncan (The Watch Bloke) is a specialist on these and comes highly recommended. You'll most likely know this but leave that dial to a specialist to clean the rust etc off it.
Lovely watch, I did get all excited when I saw the tropic strap as I thought it was an original strap.

I’m gonna look those recommendations up and start the contacting process. I’m a fan of Mike from my retro watches. But I’m reluctant to contact him after his troubles with the sea wolf. Not because he couldn’t handle it. I wouldn’t want to hand him another nightmare watch project. Thanks for the great help.

I figured the dial was so rough that a reluming might do as you say, and add value but I wasn’t sure. I’m kinda new to the world of expensive watch restoration.

Rod I was exactly the same way when I first saw the strap. But on closer inspection I realized it couldn’t have been an original strap. For one it’s an 18mm band and doesn’t quite fit the lugs. And two it’s very short and I could barely strap it to my wrist. That didn’t seem right. Maybe a ladies strap? It is old, retro and cool but sadly not original. And worst of all it has a nasty little crack in the longer strap. Are there specific names for the two strap sides?

Well great find and well worth the effort to get it fixed right I have personally taken watches most people would run away from and slowly find the parts and restore them It will not cheap or easy but in the end You will have not only saved a beautiful old watch you will have learned something too I would have some rebuild the movt as it might be able to be saved The dial needs some work but clean up very well with a clean and proper relume The hands are also very restorable with some expert hands and relume The crown is restorable with a new Nos stem and new seal installed The band is not original or correct size so I would look to our dear friend Larry aka Uncle Seiko for a proper Tropic strap I would personally make it the nicest 62 mas out there with all the correct NOS parts and best fit and finish possible overall I know I would not shy away from it if it was mine I will be watching to see how it comes along Thank you for sharing it with us God Bless,John Stay safe out there
If i had to make recommendations to who to do the work There are so many excellent friends on here who can do it If you need a list I would gladly pm you one if you would like But plan on this taking time as parts need to be found and wait times for being able to get in line for that work Best things come to those who wait too

Are there specific names for the two strap sides? I call the one '6 o'clock side' and the other - you guessed it - the '12 o'clock side.
Others call it the long (6) and short (12) but there are examples where the watch maker puts the short and long in reverse order. Lots of Grand Seikos and Presages and my SRQ021 8R48 chrono had that set up.

Pm sent my friend God Bless,John this is also extremely important Picking the right people to work on this will either waste your investment or restore this back to its former beauty I also love watching Mike Retro watch But I think this is too large of a job for anyone but the experts as this is way too involved on many fronts and may take multiple people to get this back together as it deserves Pm you should have too Also I recommend Adrian VTA too Not sure how I forgot my dear friend He is excellent and innovator for us all God Bless,John
