So the other day got my ears lowered, and walking out a guy stops me and says "Nice Panerai" I said fooled you it's a LUM-Tec but the dial does pay homage to them, especially the 12/3/6/9 font. We b.s.'d for better part of ten minutes. He tells me he has several Seiko's and casio's as well as some "replicas". He even offered that he has gone a bit wild in the last couple of years and has now just over 100 watches in his collection(Newbie)...I told him we should have support group style meetings for these addictions... Odd he wasn't wearing a watch though... I felt good about the interaction that someone had noticed what I was wearing, but then I became a bit paranoid since the hair cut cost $7 and the neighborhood one might run the risk of a watch being liberated if they thought it was of value...even if it isn't...maybe best to wear shirt sleeves.

I too like it when someone mentions my watch - which is all too rare
I will occasionaly say to a guy "nice ____ you got there" and half the time they are not happy with my reaching out so I have slowed down.

I myself don't approach strangers but I constantly watch out for them...I will, if I have reason to be acquainted, will mention noticing their watch. Had a sales guy with an Orient Dive watch w/a Orange dial on a year or so ago. I tried chatting him up on watches and he was just like: "Ahh I don't know which model, it just looked cool" Oh Okay what is it you're selling again? One customer has a Rolex, thinking it's a datejust, and I said kind of nice to be wearing at work, he said oh other then for servicing a few times I've never taken it off in 30 years...Bracelet looks like it's going to fall apart any day now... One sales guy who knows next to nothing about watches got a Baume & Mercier open heart from his wife for his 50th birthday. When he hit 25 years working for his company, the very next year, they bought him a Rolex Air-King! when I saw that I said "WOW! WOW! WOW! I must be paying way to much for my steel if they can pass out watches like that, time to look at pricing again!" I'm going to guess though that I am one of his few customers that pays much attention and it will fly under the radar but what a marketing mistake...Wondering if I should start to shake them down for some "swag" for being such a good customer?

I like a chance to comment on someone's watch when I notice one - especially if it's an old guy who probably had it since he got it for his 21st birthday. Usually it comes off well and we both go away happy. I'm still waiting for my 20 years of service Rolex 🤞🏻😆

Always good to run into other watch guys out in the wild!
I'll occasionally say "Nice watch!" or bring up the topic of watches with a stranger if I think the conversation could take an interesting turn. I'll almost always make a comment if I see someone wearing a watch that's 30+ years old. I've found that, if they're wearing a vintage piece, it's typically due to one of two reasons:
a.) They're into vintage watches, which means they're probably a "watch guy." OR
b.) They've had the watch since it was new and have worn it for 30+ years.
In either scenario, they'll typically have a good story about the piece they're wearing, which makes for good conversation.
I've stopped commenting on modern watches. 95% of the time the wearer has no interest in watches whatsoever. That's totally okay (they're actually the "normal" ones, and we're the "freaks" haha), but usually they'll look at me like I have two heads when I can tell them the make a model of their watch just by glancing at it.

I also comment to many here and they converse back. Some even say ..How about a chat and coffee or lunch. Last year I was at the Naval Commissary here with my wife and ... Four Young Women were staring at us and they came over and asked about the watch I had on. So I invited them to sit and Chat and they were fascinated with ..... My Aqualand Silver Watch. When one ask how many I had and I replied ...... She almost fell of the chair with surprise. Over all I never have any problem with others about asking or discussing Watch's at all. I even had a .... U.S. Army Full Bird Colonel I met in the complex and he asked me to come over to his home in .... The Military Housing and give me .... Two Watch's for my collection. He had ... Two that were dead so I offered to fix them for him and ... Two for his Wife. He had a couple ...... Beautiful Omega Pilot Watch's and ....Two Rolex Submariner Older ones he even invited ... Me and My Wife over for a Dinner few nights later.
Last Week I had Lunch with a ....... Army Lieutenant Colonel and His Assistant that was here visiting that was from ......... Chile and was in The Chilean Army. I was there in the store and he approached me and he said ..... " How are you Sir in Spanish and I replied back .... In Spanish and said ...... Sir I am just fine Sir. He offered me to have lunch with them and ....... We Talked for over a .... Two Hours about what he was doing and being here for the .... Two Weeks but no Classified Things. He even took a picture with Me and My Wife and one with He and I. And yes we sat at a huge table ..... Three of us and safe sitting.
