The sun's rays can be the cause of this change.
Vintage with bright pastes should not be exposed to the sun for too long.

i know it's not what anyone would want to have happen to their watch, i wouldn't want it either, but i actually don't think it looks so bad....

Here's an update, five months later. I've used the watch occasionally, but mostly it stays in the box. There has been some further lightening of the lume. Particularly noticeable is that the second hand meatball has almost returned to the colour of the hour and minute hands. The lume on the dial is also a bit lighter than in earlier photos. For comparison I will now show crops of three photos - before the incident, immediately afterwards and today.

Fascinating stuff Tristan. Great details. I had the same phenomenon happen to my 6105-8110 but never realized it! I stumbled upon a photo I took when it first came to me. I had forgotten how light the lume plots were. It darkened over time to the blackness you see here until finally I had to have new hands and the dial re-lumed to match.

Thanks HiBeat. I'm curious to see how far it has faded when 12 months rolls around. It must have been heartbreaking to have the lume on that 6105 darken so much.

I've had this happen to me too. I went into a greenhouse that was super humid and a couple hours later the lume was turning grey. Super annoying. I'm assuming it was the moisture but was probably also UV exposure.

I registered just to discuss this phenomenon. I had the very same thing happen on my ROW 7548-700B Pepsi last month. It was a creamy lume color when I received it during the winter then I wore it outside on a very hot day in the direct sun and I could visibly see my lume darkening. Turning a sort of Taupe is the way I would describe it.
It ended up holding a charge throughout the night and you could tell the darker parts were more bright like the dark parts were luming if that makes sense.
It did lighten up some when left out of the sunlight but you can tell it won’t be fully back to the original color. Then hands did the same.
I do think it was a combo of a certain heat + UV with possibly humidity third. I opened up the watch to make sure there was no signs of water or condensation.
Very bizarre to watch it change right before your eyes but at the same time one of the coolest interactions I’ve had with a watch. I wonder if the lume from this era has just aged into this weird phenomenon recently. I’ve seen other 7548s just like mine is now. Always wondered why they were greyer.

Hi phinsphan. Interesting to hear you're experiencing the same phenomenon. As you can see from my experience, it's possible that the lume will eventually return to something close to its earlier colour if you don't repeat the strong sun event.
