Have you ever bought a cheap watch with the intention of parting it out but just couldn't go through with breaking it up when it arrived ? This 6139-604x appeared on the bay a few days ago with a BIN price of £20 (which is pretty cheap for the UK). The seller said it was running okay except the chrono wouldn't reset properly. The pictures weren't great & I could see the dial had a couple of marks on it & the case back was wrong but I thought I'd buy it, take the movement out to stash away for future use & sell the rest of it, hopefully, getting most of my money back. But, when it arrived, it was running & I didn't recognise the day wheel language. So after advancing through the days, I got to Friday & realised it was a Portuguese day wheel with that special day of the week on it. I've never owned a watch with one of these wheels, so that's partly why this one is being saved from being broken up. I wore this watch for 3 days & it's only lost about 30 seconds, it's not in great shape but these never seem to be in great condition for some reason. It's going to have to be added to my beater collection as it just seems wrong to use a watch for parts when it's running okay & has an amusing day wheel. So, I'd be interested to see what some of you have bought to use as parts but were too soft to break up.

That is a great addition to the beater collection, I don't blame you one bit. I've never had a watch with the Portuguese day wheel either, perhaps one day I'll come across one. Here it the only watch I've purchased, and it was not used for my intended purpose. I got a good deal on it, and it was meant to be used for movement servicing practice. But, I couldn't tear into it...at least not yet. So alas, it sits in my desk drawer, awaiting it's fate.

I need to buy another watch box just to hold the "donor" watches that came in to be parted out, and ended up being wearable. It's very very hard to bring myself to kill a watch.

By the way, on those Jonathan tells me that the bezel had white overprinting on the silver section and that this overprinting could (and did) wear off sometimes in as little as a few weeks. Seiko blew through all the replacements and that was that. I've never seen one of these in NOS condition.

Before I knew that, I used to think that part of the insert would have just fallen off these because that's what it looked like to me. I've never seen one with a complete, original insert & having looked at quite a few photos of these watches, with different coloured dials, I don't think I've ever seen one in perfect condition. I wonder why that is ?

I wonder why that is ? They screwed up in their design & execution. Well, execution really. The white printing wore off right away. That's so atypical for Seiko - as you know their inserts normally wear like iron.

Rare watch! There is a nice one for sale on Craigslist near where I am. Guy wants $125 for it.
The tach bezel on those is really strange...silver lettering on a gray background. Wears away very quickly, and -6040s with readable tach bezels are pretty rare.

I want one!

Wears away very quickly, and -6040s with readable tach bezels are pretty rare. I had one in near-mint condition but the bezel threw me off, so I sold it. I did try it for a day or so with a bezel from a 6139-603x (red / black) and it looked pretty good actually. But at the time I wasn't OK for a mod, so away it went. Jonathan played with having an applique / decal made to replace that part but never came up with something that he was satisfied with.
