What you probably didn’t buy - Seiko ‘5718-8000’

I can see the very valid point that when a 'rare' watch (be it a VFA or a Comex 1665 or whatever) fetches orders of magnitude more money than a seemingly 'similar' watch that not all watch collectors would be willing to pay the price difference even if they could afford to. 

The WIS needs to understand that even if a rare and collectable watch is not worth more to him personally that there is a large community that values it and that is what makes it intrinsically more valuable.

I guess some guys see a Shelby Cobra and other guys see a Mustang with some extra stuff on it.

I get the analogy you're trying to make, but as someone who has a passing interest in vintage muscle cars, I feel the need to amend it.

I believe you meant that a Shelby GT350 or GT500 is a Mustang with some extra stuff on it (which, at its core, is a true statement). The Shelby AC Cobra, on the other hand, shared nothing with the Mustangs of the era other than the Ford 427 engine.

High price indeed, but it is just money. Money is easy to attain, but rare items are not. Therefore it is always best to spend money on a rare item which others want aswell.

All paintings are the same: colour on a surface, still some of them fetch mighty sums of dough.

I'd buy that watch if I had the money. A damn fine piece of horology.

It sure is an interesting past time fun to ponder what makes some items collectibles.

Funny thing is that all of this will be dust in a billion years.

Today I learnt there is a two button mechanical Seiko chronograph with a 2 hand sundial and some counter thingy.
What a cool watch.
What a crappy story for the collector.
