I've been lusting over DOXA divers as long as I can remember. From Cusslers novels and articles on Cousteau in National Geographic. Can never pull the trigger because I could never decide between 300 and 300T. Color is also a problem- leaning towards orange but black or silver is also appealing, as is the blue, but I'm thinking of limiting my choice to the original 3. Never seen one in the metal (which would help) I'll be following this tread closely.

I've been struggling with the same thing.... I think the 300T probably. I don't mind the Jenny Fish logo and other bits that some seem to get religious about. I am really drawn to the dark blue "caribbean" dial, but I think you have to get Orange first.... and then other colors... Oh boy.
On the plus side, no sales tax and free shipping makes the price "the final price" ...

I have the Caribbean and I really like it. Initially I was focused on the orange dial because it's the most iconic version but since I already have an orange dialed diver, I opted for this version. Don't think you can go wrong with any iteration of the 300T but should you have any budget concerns, you may wish to check out a Chinese homage producer named Seestern. With a Seiko movement, they're pretty good value.

Oh, that looks sharp. My problem isn't so much buying the Doxa or a stand-in, it's not buying several Doxas because I can't decide which color is the best. I wonder if they ever go on sale, or if the list price is always "the price"...

The list price is always the list price. You can get them on Watch Recon like new for about $200 less, but that's it. They do hold their value, so very little risk there.

Rob Clive Cussler sure pumped out a lot of novels but the one that piqued my interest was Night Train which focused on the wreck of The Empress of Ireland. I had the privilege on going on several diving expeditions on it and over the course of these trips, one of my buddies exchanged messages with Clive Cussler. In fact, he even had Clive over for dinner when Mr Cussler was in Toronto!

I have to confess that I'm certainly no expert on Doxa but having lusted after one for many years, I became aware of some controversy surrounding the brand. From what I gather, the mumblings concerned ownership and subsequently manufacture. Such discussions are inevitable when folks become obsessed with a particular brand. I've included a link to a video that sort of touches on the topic and there also many such references of the Doxa forum on WUS.
As Rob indicated, the prices for these pieces remain fairly strong so when it came to take the plunge, I opted for purchasing a new one since there didn't seem to be much difference price-wise between new and pre-owned. I'm sure there are some subtle differences between old and new but I'm very happy with my decision.

Great video. The source of parts is a bit concerning. Makes getting a knockoff not as big of a crime.

Great video for sure, but I believe it pushed me off the bandwagon. I'm certain that "some" Chinese manufacturers are capable of producing quality parts, but I want no part of China in a watch that costs that much. That's a damn shame too, because the 300T has been on my short list for quite some time. What's next, is someone going to burst my bubble and inform me that the Speedy Pro is a Chinese watch too?

Wait... The video mentions a few models with "unknown" calibers. Are we saying those are Chinese? The 300 and 300T are ETA 2824-2's... are the cases and other bits Chinese? Also - there is a thread somewhere online about "MADE IN JAPAN" being a very loose term with many SEIKOs marked that way in fact made in MALAYSIA or elsewhere and then finished in JAPAN.... (here's the long thread: www.watchuseek.com/threads/where-seiko-watches-are-really-made-a-juicy-mistake.1084156/)

Yeah, it's the way these days. At my place we have our products marked 'Assembled in Australia' but the production line for the circuit boards is now in Malaysia. The circuit boards are marked as such, so no one is 'cheating' but we all know what is going on here. It's no longer made domestically (wherever you are) because there's only a few places left in the world were labor is cheap and unorganized, government workplace 'overlording' is minimal, and emissions / waste just 'go away'. Meanwhile we keep buying the cheap stuff made under exploitation and driving the product down to the bottom. The new expectations make it such that things produced domestically are now 'expensive' instead of a reasonable exchange of money for effort. It's tough to compete as most people just want whatever 'it' is and don't even think about what it actually takes to make 'it'.

Did I mention I like old watches made before all this game playing was in full swing

Damn, please tell me the original isn't full of Chinese parts. I can't say for sure but for the most part, the movements are mostly from third parties such as Seiko, Miyota and probably on occasion, Seagull. Everything else I suspect is made in China.

(here's the long thread: www.watchuseek.com/threads/where-seiko-watches-are-really-made-a-juicy-mistake.1084156/)The video is not saying the movements are Chinese. When you go to the Doxa web-site all models are equipped with what is said to be a Swiss mechanical movement, self winding. The only reference to an actually named movement are with the Sub 200T Graph with a Valjoux movement and the Sub 300 Carbon Aqua Lung edition with an ETA moment. So the rest may be Swiss movements but remain somewhat "unknown" . This is not necessarily unusual as other brands wanting to use Swiss movements are beholden to the available supply from ETA, Sellitta or others. Doxa indicates that some movements are decorated by themselves, again not an unusual thing. The movements are not developed in-house which is not uncommon for most brands. The story concerning Made In Japan vs Malaysia has been known and discussed ad nauseum for years.

So this is where I stand. A while back I decided that I wanted to dip my toe in the Swiss pool. I narrowed it down to 3 brands and 5 watches Speedy Pro- No brainer, classic design, Timeless. Problem , I'm a water guy. Swim. Dive on occasion, surf...maybe, just maybe a chronograph is not for me ( I still have close to a dozen 6139's, so that's weak) Doxa- yes ma'am, loved it since I was about 12 or 13, but to shell out that kind of dough for doubtfull pedigree?, I'm not getting a $200 knock off either, that was not the point of the exercise. Tudor -Now we're talking. In house, great reputation. Not crazily priced for what you're getting...out of the 5 watches I mentioned, 3 are Tudors. The blue BB, the Blue BB58, and the GMT. The beauty is that I can actually go and try them on at the AD. Just when I was practically set on DOXA as it was also the cheapest option. I should just sit on the fence some more.

Ya - I'm fairly new to this whole world - seems many of these topics that are new to me are generally old news - thanks for the rehash anyhow! I am ok with Doxa using ETA movements - seems pretty common, especially at this price point. While they don't name the brand or model, on the 300 and 300T pages, as well as the others I checked quickly - they do say:
MOVEMENT Swiss mechanical automatic, self-winding ## hours Power Reserve ## Jewels Decorated by DOXA
I don't think they could get away with putting Japanese movements in these, let alone Chinese movements. My guess is that would be the death of their business.
