To answer my own question, I think they are called "jump hour" watches. While I was aware of (and love) the Lange Zeitwerk for this kind of dial, I'm not sure dropping $80k on one is a great idea... Anyone here own a jump hour? www.acollectedman.com/blogs/journal/jump-hour-watches

dapellegrini - You got it - Jump hour watches are plentiful and made by many different manufacturers. An Ebay search will bring you hundreds of them and many at very reasonable prices. Not quite a jump-hour but similar and one I'm searching for half-halfheartedly: A Vulcain MinStop

Yes, I think I need one... but which one is going to be hard to determine. Most of these are tiny little things - or cheap junk. Well, one more on the list of things I think I can't live without. I wonder if any of these came out of Japan? Most seem to be German or Swiss... Lots of German.

I think the trouble is that the mechanics require either two side-by-side dials and perhaps a coaxial sub dial. You've got a big round disc but a small square viewing area. If you want big numbers you have to make the whole watch that much larger.
There are a couple of innovative ideas in presenting this, including flipping the watch upside down and moving the strap points in close with just a peak-through window for the information. It really hides all the dead space associated with one of these watches quite well!

Sometimes they are also called (and technically they are) digital watches, as the time is represented in binary numbers.

And if you want to see some more styles of watch in this vein like it I'd highly recommend a great book called "Retro Watches" by Josh Sims/Mitch Greenblatt. Easy to get hold of, they pop up on ebay (at least they do in the UK) for between £10/£15 quite regularly.
