I'm new to the vintage Seiko/Citizen world, though not new to vintage watches. My interest began 10 years ago, starting with Swiss dress watches from the '30s-'40s. I love to wear all my watches so never grew what may be called a serious collection, although over the years I realised I had more pieces than I could regularly use. So went through a rethink of my interests which, together with a change in life-style, oriented me towards sport watches from the '60s and '70s. And that's what made me "discover" the non-diver Seiko production of those decades. It was love at first sight, so here I'm to learn more and - for the time being at least (but hopefully not forever) - look at other collectors' beautiful watches. Best, Max
Welcome to the forum maxbrux! There are a lot of great Seiko pieces here to learn about and of course there are other fine watches to learn about too. I look forward to seeing some of your collected watches here soon.
Thanks for the welcome victor, inboost, dapelegrini and endy!
Unfortunately (for me :-)) so far I've only looked at Seiko's pics ... and been overwhelmed by the sheer variety of case & dial variations: basically almost any new model that I discover has some interesting characteristics. So my main goal so far has been to try and get a sense of how to "group" references so that I can then research a bit with a clearer target.
I'll be happy to share some of my non-Seiko watches (some no longer with me): where would it be more appropriate to post? Member's galleries?
Well, I did my first post in members' gallerie, but for some reason am unable to post the same pic here.
I'm using postimages and I've tried both the "insert imagine" button and the "insert link" but they seem not to work ....
Any advice?
I set up an account at IMGUR and just use the "copy BCC" then insert images from there.
As to the other question about where to being grouping references well that's tough. I thought I'd buy just white dials? then I narrowed it down some. After buying too many Lunch money I hit I several that make me happy to wear most days, while a bunch get relegated to the drawer or boxes. Just peaking out for a night or two because they hold that kind of power. It's just not staying power.
There are ton and I mean tons of Seiko Variations. Some movements may have just a few years of use and other decades. Then there are movements based on previous movements. The 70XX series for example. The 7001/7005/7006 were followed by the 7009, which lasted into three decades 70's, 80's, 90's. And we all know the styles of the 70's had def change by the time the 90's rolled around...Those movements are a variation of no date date and day date nothing overly special all just Seiko Work Horses every last one. I love repeating (only to aggravate dome) that the 7005 was Seiko's attempt at making a watch with as few parts as possible...
Anyway stick around look at the photos, ask question. Plenty around here with far more knowledgeable than I, that would love to share.
They aren't dive watches, nor are they really dress watches - kind of in-between. The 6117's are a very nice modern size at around 41mm. The 6217's are smaller, around 38mm - which is also popular right now, depending on your wrist.
Thanks for the tutorial on pic dapellegrini & small. I'll try again ...
And thanks especially for a much appreciated advice on "orienting": I know wanting practically anything you see it's an inevitable phase when starting to explore a brand ... but I still get caught in it - at my venerable age😎
The only advantage - sort of - of having been there, it's that I have managed (so far ...) to refrain from actually buying something!
In the meantime, as a sort of soft approach to World time (and disavowing what I wrote earlier about money ...) I just joined a buying group in Italy to get the recent Seiko GMT SKX re-interpretation, the SSK005K1
