Too much IMO, but I guess it depends upon how much you plan to put into it. Looks like a skinny wrist, make sure the bracelet will fit.

assuming it's working properly (he says it is) Push them for some more details (if you haven't already). I'm relativley new to buying mechanicals myself, but I can tell you that "working" means different things to different people, and sometimes it just means "the hands move if I shake it". I would ask if they have checked whether it keeps time, what sort of power reserve it has, whether the day/date changeover works, whether the chrono hands reset to vertical properly, etc. You will probably get a warning about the lume on the hands from some of the more experienced forum members. Manky lume like that can be a sign that moisture has found its way into the watch, which could spell trouble for the movement.

I thought about the size of the bracelet since I have an eight inch wrist....I thought maybe I could even flip the bracelet if it was too small to offset the expense a little.
Refurbished these seem to be selling for about $450.00 or so on Ebay....except for the dreamers of course.
If I could get it up cleaned up for a reasonable price I wouldn't mind having a little invested in it....you don't see these around all that often....except for the re-dialed versions from the Phillipines on Ebay.

Sort of a sparse description in his ad: "I am selling my Rare Vintage Seiko 6138-0030 Speedtimer Chronograph with Original "Fishbone" Bracelet. Original Dial and Hands as well. All links are present. all the functions work, chrono pushers, etc." Might need to drop him a PM for more specifics.

A complete service, which is more than likely will need, will cost you close to $200. Add the cost of a crystal and relume/replacement hands, it's quite an investment. If the bracelet doesn't fit at least a 7.25" wrist, it's not going to be very desirable. I'd pass, and look for a cleaner version that doesn't require as much work. They come up on the forums from time to time, I wouldn't rely on eBay for a nice one at a decent price.

Looks pretty rough...even for $250. I'd pass. There are nicer ones out there for the money.

Let me interject my .02 cents worth here if I may........ First off the watch is a 6138-0030 and not a 6139 as you stated (at least I'm pretty sure). I have the somewhat rarer if you will variety and that being the 6138-0031 (subtle differences) ............. It's not a secret as to what I paid for mine as it was FS at one time on the Forum so I'll divulge that..........I paid $200.00 for mine. A couple of things to consider here about mine was the fact that Spencer (and I didnt buy it from him) had TOTALLY serviced the watch with a TON of new parts and gaskets which if I would have had to pay for would have cost me around $200.00 The crystal and crystal gasket were both good but had I needed to replace them they would have been around $40.00-$50.00 (guesstimate) The hands were either NOS or lumed by Spencer (cant recall exactly for sure) ...........either way if you had to have them re-lumed you can add another $75.00 The case was done by Shawn in a trade but to re-finish the case would liklely be around $75.00 Tim is correct.......... the price EVEN with the original band is too much and a crap shoot at best! By the time you bought the watch and had all of the things done the price could easily exceed ..........TOO much money my friend IMHO

(I have also started a separate thread about this...but I thought I'd post it here also.)
I have been looking for a Seiko 6138-0030....lo and behold today I get a PM over at WUS from a "Dcso211" saying he has the exact watch I'm looking for and that he was referred to me by a member here.
I thought it was odd that he didn't PM me here (maybe he's not a member here?) yet he found me over at WUS.
I'm just being cautious as the person does have a decent post count at WUS....but no feedback at all....which I do find a little strange since he has sold several watches there.
Anyone know this guy?

Do not hesitate to deal with Sean. Awesome guy . . . . one of the best. His work is TOP notch and you will not only get a primo piece but you will nave no regrets at all. If it were me, I'd do it in a heart beat.
