Age old topic, much debate, soul vs precision. Adherents to both sides, endless threads, endless perspectives.
Tonight I'm wearing my much loved Citizen C80 Wingman. The first serious watch in my life. Bought on credit that I could ill afford, worn and beaten to hell every day for 13 years. Put away 8 years ago as I began this long and twisted Seiko odyssey. Recently had new life breathed into it by our very own Spencer Klein.
I was checking the time a little while ago and it struck me. The real reason why I have no interest in quartz. It's not a lack of soul. I appreciate and respect the technology that goes into some very fine quartz time pieces. Some I even lust for. And yet, there is something critical missing.
The watch does not need me.
And that is the crux of it. There is no symbiosis. No real organic relationship between us. I know it is a bit twisted to extend this type of emotionally charged train of thought to an inanimate object but that is the force with which it struck me. And in having this revelation, this minor epiphany, I see that I am really sick. The worst kind of sick. I know I am sick. I admit I am sick. And I never want to get better.

That is truly revealing. I do favor automatics, however I'm wearing a quartz as I type. The quartz just sits there ticking away unaffected by anything I do. I can take it off and set it down and come back a week later and it acts the same. It does not miss me or need me. My automatics, depend on me to keep them running, they in return supply me with the time and date. A much more personable relationship.

That's a very interesting viewpoint....and one I had not considered....yet it is very true.

It's automatic all the way for me.
But there's a very tasteful R/C Citizen Eco Drive on Creation Watches that is within my price bracket........................... wtf.gif For emergency grab and go use, you understand.

For me qwartz, in particular Atomic G'.s its all about grabbing a watch in the morning, throwing it on and rushing out the door. Right time, right date, right watch:-) But like I said that's just me. Auto's are still great in my eyes but I can't be bothered with having to nanny a watch any more.

And I prefer cats because they don't need me.

Although I do wear quartz watches, for me there is no real affection for them. When I wear and automatic, late in the evening, I love to sit in a dimly lit room and watch the second hand glide across the dial...mesmerizing.

Very interesting perspective and one that I think explains why I like autos so much especially vintage ones... BUT...
I DO have days when I can't be bothered to set the time or date nor do any sort of winding... that's when I need a quartz.

That's just the sort of enabling peer feedback that will lead me to getting an Aqualand someday...because I really need a depth gauge.

As far as any inanimate object "needing" us, it can probably be said for just about anything. Sooner or later they will require our attention/maintenance. JMHO.

I love all of my automatics but to painfully honest.........they are a major PITA! I know it only takes a few brief seconds to shake em and get them fired back up again but then one has to go thru the process of re-setting the time and the day/date whereas with Quartz all I need to do is pick one up and strap it on doing nothing! Now days the batteries seem to be of better quality so if I get 3- 4 years out of one then I'm happy! thunbsup.gif These are two of my very favorites I own............

I think a good watch is a good watch....period.
I have some autos that I like very much....but the quartz thing doesn't bother me at all.
My SBBN015 Tuna is quartz and it's one of my favorite watches.

That's pretty deep and you are sick laugh1.gif
But then most of us in this hobby are in one way or another.
I find that mechanical watches give me much more than quartz ones do. That's because I love to repair and restore them. There is just so much more enjoyment of getting a mechanical movement back together to have the balance wheel start swinging back and forth before I even get the bridge screw in place. Some analog quartz movements require almost as much work as the mechanical ones but I don't get that same feeling of accomplishment when I finally put the battery back in and the seconds hand ticks away in it's boring 1 second steps.
The mechanical watch needs me at all levels while the quartz just needs a battery.

Every time I check the time I am consciously aware that just that physical action is having a critical interaction with the watch. It's like muscle memory except that when I do it with a quartz watch it's as if the muscle is asleep.

I love all my watches . . . quartz and auto . . . just depends on which one I feel like wearing.
